Warm Up 8 + (-9) 14 + (-3) -11 + (-18) 6 + (-6) -4 + (-6) -13 + (-10) Find each sum: 8 + (-9) 14 + (-3) -11 + (-18) 6 + (-6) -4 + (-6) -13 + (-10)

Subtracting Integers

We can use tiles to subtract integers. Remember:  positive  negative Find -6 – (-2) . Start with 6 negative tiles, then take away 2 negative tiles.  -6 – (-2) = -4 

EAT! Am I telling you to do something positive or negative? POSITIVE

Do not EAT! I told you to do the opposite of something positive. NEGATIVE

Do Not not EAT! I don’t want you to not eat! I’m back to telling you to eat! So 2 negatives make a POSITIVE!

Subtracting Negative Integers Two negative become a positive! 4 – (- 3) 2. -7 – (- 2)

Try some! Subtract: -5 – 4 6 – 8 -3 – 5
