Compression & File Types Compression is used to reduce file sizes and change various attributes of an image file. These attributes include: File Type Resolution Dimensions Bit depth

Types of compression - Lossy Data is removed during compression before transmission. When the file is received by the recipient it does not revert to its original state. Data loss is permanent This is usually not enough to be noticed This is mainly used for images, video and sound files. Q: Why is this? Q: If the file is sent on again and again how will this impact the file quality?

Types of compression - Lossless Data is removed during compression before transmission. When the file is received by the recipient it does revert to its original state. Data loss is not permanent This is important for file types which can not loose any of its data e.g. a text document. Q: Why would lossy not be suitable for a text document?

Question 1) Describe the difference between Lossy and Lossless compression. Giving an example where each would be used. [4] 2) Bridget intends to upload photographs to the ‘news’ section of the website. What might be the best file type and why? [4]

File Types – Internet standards What are these common file extensions used for? .mpeg .jpg .pdf .doc .mp3 .mp4 .wmv .avi .ppt .xls .gif .exe .rtf .bmp

optimising Why do it? Optimising your images will reduce your website’s page loading times, reduce bandwidth and improve the browsing experience for visitors. Your search engine ranking should also improve due to your pages loading quicker. Remember that whilst compressing an image will reduce file size, quality can also be notably reduced if you compress an image too much. It is therefore important to get the balance between image quality and image file size right.

Optimising Use specific optimising software. RIOT GIMP Photo editing software allows you to optimise images to upload to the internet. ‘SAVE AND OPTIMISE FOR WEB’ File Format Crop Thumbnail views FOR MORE INFO CLICK HERE

Questions 1) State two file types suitable for images to be uploaded to FUN GYMS website [2] 2) Bridget shoots her photos with a DSLR and uses the SD Card to transfer the photographs onto her computer.
