Our New Freshmen Born in 1998 Class of 2020 The Age of the Selfie “They have been described as narcissistic. They have been told their entire short lives, how wonderful they are, how beautiful they are and how smart they are.” I, I, I….Mine, Mine, Mine Interior Development & Exterior Development. Being Comfortable with themselves. We are Curating the Self AND don’t want to overlook Others

First Day Activities Diane Smith has written a thoughtful essay on how to explain why taking courses in integrative studies is important. This is a writing instruction course. It’s also a science course, psychology course, history class, and fine arts class. Bridget Trogden’s “open letter to my students”. “What do you want to be when you grown up? In this class, we will focus on your thinking and on expanding your thoughts with others.” Letter to yourself Freedom to Ask Questions. Courage to Seek Answers.

Why Am I Taking this Class? Read texts which require slow reading, from left to right, & annotation. Remind that whatever you do in life, you have to write clearly. It’s important to think & wrestle with what you believe and why you believe it. It’s important to define who you are & who you will become. Connect to course title. To help you develop deeper thoughts and make transition from high school writing to college writing. In high school, you wrote to show you know something. In college, writing is about thinking.

“Teaching has an element of mystery, involving as it does the yearly encounter with new people, the fear that you will be inadequate to meet their needs, as well as the rewards of seeing them become stronger because of your work. ” -Kohl     Reminders : Be sure you add your personal touch to your syllabus. We teach who we are, and want to leave behind our legacy to students. Play to your strengths. Find ways to make learning extra special for your students & be sure and sprinkle some pixie dust. Email me your syllabus by next Wednesday.
