Does Haggai Speak to Our Generation?

The Return from Captivity A quick review: Zerubbabel (536 B.C.) along with Jeshua the high priest, with around 50,000 Jews, return from captivity. Prophets: Haggai and Zechariah. Jews started building the temple, Were stopped after one year. Enemies waited until Cyrus was dead, then wrote to Cambyses about Jerusalem. He ordered building stopped. Prophets Haggai and Zechariah stirred the people to build the temple (520-516 B.C.). Esther fits in between Ezra chapters 6-7, about 485 B.C. Ezra leads a return (458 B.C.). Concentrates on purifying the worship. Nehemiah comes to build the walls of Jerusalem (445 B.C.) Malachi, the last prophet of the O.T. (432 B.C.)

Does Haggai Speak to Our Generation? God will accomplish His will -- according to His time & purpose (Hag. 1:1; Gal. 4:4-7; Mt. 25:31-46) God takes note when man thinks his ways are more insightful than His (Hag. 1:2; 1Cor. 3:5-7) God takes note when men put desire of physical security -- above His work (Hag. 1:3- 4; Lk. 12:21; 1 Tim. 6:6-12)

Does Haggai Speak to Our Generation? God demands that men do some self- reflecting (Hag. 1:5, 7; 1 Cor. 10:12; 2 Cor. 13:5) God may withhold physical blessings when men disobey (Hag. 1:5-11; Heb. 12:7-9; Rev. 2:18-29; Gal. 6:7-8) If one will consider his ways, repent, & do as God commands -- then God will take pleasure in it, and be glorified (Hag. 1:8; Lk. 15; 2 Cor. 5:9; Matt. 5:14-16)

Does Haggai Speak to Our Generation? God takes note when people unite to accomplish His will (Hag. 1:12a; Eph. 4:1-6) God is to be feared (Hag. 1:12b; Rev. 1:17; Prov. 1:7) God’s messengers speak God’s message (Hag. 1:13; 1 Cor. 2:1-5; 1Pet. 4:11)

Does Haggai Speak to Our Generation? What a comfort -- to KNOW that God is WITH YOU (Hag. 1:13b; Matt. 28:18-20, 18:20) Godly reverence compels men to be stirred up in spirit -- to work (Hag. 1:14; Josh. 24:15; 1Ki. 18:21; Ez. 18:20-23; Jn. 1:42) God takes note of when men determine to work, and get busy following through in faithful obedience (Hag. 1:15; 2 Cor. 6:2; Acts 18:8-11)

Does Haggai Speak to Our Generation? When God’s messengers speak His word -- God is speaking through that messenger (Hag. 2:1-2a; 1 Pet. 4:11; 2 Cor. 5:20) God desires for the faithful to be encouraged (Hag. 2:1-3; Rom. 1:12; 1Cor. 14:31; Col. 2:2) God wills for His people (leaders included) to be STRONG (Hag. 2:3-4; 2 Pet. 3:11-18; 1Tim. 4:12-16; 1Pet 5:1-4) God is with His people, just as He promised when His covenant was established (Hag. 2:4-9; Ex. 19-24; Eph. 1:11-13; Acts 2:36-47)

Does Haggai Speak to Our Generation? If one is defiled by that which is unholy (i.e. sin, today), then whatever he offers to God by way of service is therefore “unclean” (unacceptable) (Hag. 2:10-14; Matt. 15:8-9; Cf. Jn. 12:42; Acts 10) Only with the Lord’s blessing, may one see the fruit of spiritual increase (Hag. 2:15-19; 1 Cor. 3:11-15; Acts 3:19) The Lord CAN and will bless YOU, from this day forward (Hag. 2:19; Phil. 4:15-20; Prov. 30:8-9; Eph. 3:14-21) God is a keeper of His promises, and He HAS established a kingdom that cannot be shaken (Hag. 2:6- 9, 20-23; Heb. 12:26-29; Acts 2:36-47; Col. 1:13-14)
