Writing is a journey. What is the next step? Pre-writing stage/brainstorming Introduction Thesis statement Body paragraphs Conclusion

What should you have in your Introduction thus far? Step 1: Hook statement Step 2: Response to literature Step 3: Short summary Step 4: Background information about your topic Step 5: Thesis statement

What is a thesis statement? A thesis statement is a complete sentence that contains a debatable idea about a topic. A thesis statement must do these three things: MUST be an assertion about your topic. MUST be your opinion about your topic. MUST be a complete sentence. REMEMBER DO NOT USE 1ST OR 2ND PERSON PRONOUNS IN YOUR WRITING (you, I, me, us, we, our, your).

What is a thesis statement? tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of the subject matter under discussion. tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper *sneak peek: for example (movie trailers)

Important: Your thesis Statement MUST have a “so what”. Why is your assertion important? Why should the audience care about your argument? Go beyond saying John proctor is bad and Abigail Williams is good.

Avoid using statements like: Instead of this: “In this paper, I will discuss how John Proctor is a good man.” “This essay will discuss” “My essay will talk about” “I will argue that” “I am going to write about” Why should you avoid those statements?

Try this instead: “Throughout The Crucible, Mary Warren displays her inability to think for herself, fragility, and weak mindedness.

Thesis statements: Subtopics List three subtopics that represent three body paragraphs. Mary Warren cannot think for herself. Mary Warren is fragile. Mary Warren is weak-minded

THESIS STATEMENT CHECKLIST: MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL OF THESE COMPONENTS 1. Complete sentence. 3. It is the last sentence of your introduction 2. Debatable. IT MUST BE ABLE TO BE ARGUED 4. Can be supported by textual evidence 5. Not too broad or too narrow
