The Elements of Culture Main ideas: Human beings are members of social groups with shared and unique sets of behaviors and attitudes. Language and religion are two very important aspects of culture.

Defining Culture: Culture is the total of knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors shared by and passed on by the members of a specific group. Culture involves the following factors: Food and shelter Religion Relationships to family and others Language Education Security/protection Political and social organization Creative expression

Society – a group that shares a geographic region, a sense of identity, and a culture. Ethnic group – refers to a specific group that shares a language, customs, and a common heritage.

Innovation – taking existing technology and resources and creating something new to meet a need.

Diffusion – the spread of ideas, inventions, or patterns of behavior.

Acculturation occurs when a society changes because it accepts or adopts an innovation.

Language Language helps establish a cultural identity. Geographers estimate that between 3,000-6,500 languages are spoken across the world today. Language can be spread by trade or migration.

World Languages Video Questions 1. What is the most common language in the world? How many people speak it? 2. What is second on the list? How many people speak it? 3. What is third? Religion Religion consists of a belief in a supernatural power or powers that are regarded as the creators and maintainers of the universe. Monotheistic – with a belief in one god Polytheistic – with a belief in many gods Animistic or traditional – often with a belief in divine forces in nature

Major Religions of the World Three major religions of the world began in Southwest Asia and two in South Asia. Southwest Asia – Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are all monotheistic and share similar basic beliefs and some prophets and teachers. South Asia – Buddhism and Hinduism

Judaism The oldest of the Southwest Asian religions, Judaism is concentrated in Israel. Established more than 3,200 years ago, Judaism is the oldest monotheistic religion. Religious book: Torah Religious center: Jerusalem, Israel

Christianity Evolved about 2,000 years ago from the teachings of Judaism. Based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. Christians live on every continent and consist of three major groups: Roman Catholic, Protestant, and Eastern Orthodox.

Islam Based on the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, who began teaching around 613 AD. Close ties to the prophets and teachers of Judaism and Christianity. Holy book: Qur’an. Two major divisions are Sunni and Shiite.

Hinduism One of the world’s oldest religions dating back about 5,000 years ago. Usually considered a polytheistic religion. The religious requirements of a caste system – levels of fixed social classes with specific rites and duties – shape many aspect of Hindus’ lives and culture.

Buddhism An offshoot of Hinduism, Buddhism developed about 563 B.C. in India, near the Nepal border. It’s founder Siddhartha Gautama (aka the Buddha or Enlightened one) rejected the idea of caste. Teachings promote the correct way of living in order to reach an enlightened spiritual state called nirvana.
