Science Starter How many cranial nerves are there? How many of the cranial nerves are associated with the eyes? You lose feeling in your legs, name which of the 5 spinal nerves could be effected. Describe how sensation causes movement using the terms: afferent, efferent, spinal cord, skin, muscle

Unit 3: The Nervous System Objective 3.5: Autonomic Nervous System

I. Autonomic Nervous System The involuntary branch of the nervous system Consists of only motor nerves Divided into 2 divisions Sympathetic division Parasympathetic division

II. Anatomy of the Sympathetic Division Originates from spinal nerves Ganglia (neurons outside the brain) are near the spinal cord Short neuron and long neuron transmit impulse from CNS to the effector (muscle) Norepinephrine and epinephrine are neurotransmitters

Sympathetic Pathways Figure 7.26 Slide 7.71 Copyright © 2003 Pearson Education, Inc. publishing as Benjamin Cummings

III. Anatomy of the Parasympathetic Division Originates from the brain stem (cranial nerves) & sacral Terminal ganglia are at the effector organs Always uses acetylcholine as a neurotransmitter

IV. Autonomic Functioning Sympathetic – “fight-or-flight” Response to unusual stimulus Takes over to increase activities “E” division = exercise, excitement, emergency, and embarrassment

IV. Autonomic Functioning Parasympathetic – housekeeping Conserves energy Maintains daily necessary body functions “D” division - digestion, defecation, and diuresis (urination)

In summary Sympathetic: Gas, Gas! Parasympathetic: Brake, Brake!

“I’ve Fallen Over & I Can’t Get Up To explore the role of the autonomic nervous system we will be exploring the story of a high school football player There are 4 parts to the story, work with your group on each!

Part 1 – Children playing in the heat Read through the story on your own or as a group Answer the questions at the end on your paper As a group come up and write 1-2 symptoms on the paper at the front

Part 2 – The High School football game Read through the story on your own or as a group Answer the questions at the end on your paper As a group come up to the front and write on the second paper any new symptoms and any disorder/injury you think Greg may have suffered

Part 3 – The Neurologist Read through the story on your own or as a group Answer the questions at the end on your paper As a group come up and write 1-2 symptoms on the paper at the front and write whether you think Greg had a long-term problem or an injury

Part 4 – The follow-up visit Read through the story for homework Answer the questions at the end on your paper and turn in the entire case study tomorrow for a grade!

Exit Quiz Which division of the autonomic nervous system (sympathetic or parasympathetic) would the following events activate? Your brother scaring you in the hallway Meditation Eating a big meal Running a 100 meter dash Watching an action movie Listening to mellow music
