Figure 1 The Crystal Structure of BA2MA4Pb5I16 (A) View of the unit cell, which includes two individual perovskite layers offset by half perovskite cavity length (∼3.15 Å) normal to the b axis. (B) View of a single layer along the b axis highlights the configuration of the BA and MA cations along the perovskite channels. (C) Precession images of reciprocal space generated from the experimental X-ray diffraction data show the (010) (top) and (101) (bottom) slices of the reciprocal space. The figure highlights the absence of diffuse scattering along the (0k0) direction, revealing the absence of undergrown phases of other n members. The arrows point to the five well-defined reflections in the (0k0) direction, which occur between the (2¯02) (blue circle) and (2¯1¯2¯2) (green circle) reflections and are characteristic of the stacking pattern of the n = 5 RP perovskite. Figure 2 Morphological and Structural Analysis of BA2MA4Pb5I16 (A) Typical SEM images of BA2MA4Pb5I16 reveal the plate-like morphology of the crystals as well as their tendency toward plastic deformation and vertical twin intergrowth. (B) Synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction pattern (11BM-B, λ = 0.459200 Å) of a powdered sample of BA2MA4Pb5I16 indicates the high phase purity of the bulk material. Pattern matching of the data agrees well with the unit cell obtained for the single crystal. (C) In-house X-ray diffraction pattern (Miniflex 600, λ = 1.540593 Å) of selected individual crystals of BA2MA4Pb5I16 illustrates the tendency of the crystal toward twinning and growing domains normal to the plate-like crystals. As a result, both the (0k0) and (h0l) reflections can be observed for a typical crystal, as shown in the SEM photograph. The scale bars in all SEM images represent 50 μm. (C) Γ-point wave functions of BA2MA4Pb5I16 (n = 5) at VBM and CBM and computed without SOC. The top of the VB is mainly composed of 5p orbitals of I and 6s orbitals of Pb, whereas CBM is mainly composed of the empty in-plane 6p states of Pb. The other two degenerate states of CBM (CBM3 and CBM4) also reveal the in-plane bonding character of Pb 6p orbitals that show up at the first and fifth layers of the inorganic part, as for CBM1 and CBM2 (CBM5 and CBM6 are given in Figure S3).
