Presentation transcript:

Bellwork – List the scales of temperature. Fahrenheit Celsius Kelvin

2. What is heat? Energy transferred between objects that are at different temperatures. From higher temperature to lower temperature.

3. What is Temperature? Measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in an object. All matter is made of atoms or molecules that are always moving. The faster the particles are moving, the more kinetic energy they have. The more kinetic energy the particles of an object have, the higher the temperature of the object is.

4. Which particles have a higher temperature and why? Faster particles causes more kinetic energy, and therefore higher temperature.

5. How can we convert between different scales of temperature? Fahrenheit to Celsius Celsius to Fahrenheit Celsius to Kelvin Kelvin to Celsius

Let’s practice: Convert the following temperatures: 100 °C to °F 32°F to °C 0°C to K 298 K to °C

solid liquid gas

7. What are phase changes? When a solid turns into a liquid, this is ___melting__. When a liquid turns into a gas, this is ____evaporation________. When a solid turns into a gas, this is __sublimation_____. When a gas turns into a solid, this is ____deposition_______. When a gas turns into a liquid, this is ____condensation______. When a liquid turns into a solid, this is ____freezing___.

8. We can represent the states of matter and the phase changes using a: Heating curve

9. Below is a heating curve of water 9. Below is a heating curve of water. Let’s label all the states of matter and the phase changes. gas freezing melting Liquid & gas Solid & liquid liquid evaporation condensation solid
