Warm-Up 11/28/16 and 11/29/16 What do you think… How do we get energy for our cells? What is digestion? What organs are involved in digestion? Go to the class website and VIEW the “11-28-16 and 11-29-16 Digestive System” PowerPoint Presentation
Transition Before break we studied how individual cells create usable energy to do work (photosynthesis and cellular respiration). Let’s “zoom out” even further to see how processes in the body help breakdown the food we eat, which eventually leads to cells making usable energy.
Before I learned: Human Body Poster *Prior Knowledge* On your paper, you will diagram a food of your choice being rearranged throughout the body during digestion Be sure to Identify/label and color: The organs you think are involved Where absorption of nutrients happens What happens to matter that cannot be used by the body
The Digestive System 11/28/16 and 11/29/16 Pg. 49 Objective: I will be able to illustrate how the human body digests food and releases energy to my cells as evidenced by creating a human body poster. The Digestive System 11/28/16 and 11/29/16 Pg. 49
What is the Digestive System? Digestive system: a group of organs that takes in and breaks down food and eliminates solid wastes. Why is it needed? Food you eat is in large pieces and your cells need molecules for cell processes.
The Process of Digestion Mouth Esophagus Stomach Small Intestine Large Intestine Rectum Anus
The Process of Digestion Mouth- chewing begins; moistens food with saliva; release of starch-digesting enzyme Esophagus- lubrication with mucus, moves food to stomach
The Process of Digestion Stomach- mixes and dissolves food particles with secretions; release of protein-digesting enzymes; empties dissolved food (chyme) into small intestine
The Process of Digestion Small intestine- where mixing, digestion, and absorption of most nutrients into your blood happens. The nutrients are then transported by blood to other parts of your body Large intestine- absorption of sodium, potassium, and water into blood; formation of feces
The Process of Digestion Rectum- stores feces and expels it via the anus Anus- opening to the outside of the body
Wait a minute…What about the… LIVER, GALLBLADDER, and PANCREAS? They are ACCESSORY organs Liver: produces bile to break down fat, removes wastes and toxins, stores vitamins and minerals Gallbladder: stores the bile produced by the liver Pancreas: produces enzymes that neutralize acidic chyme and breakdown proteins, fats and carbs
Summary of digestion Figure 3.8
Lets turn to the Left hand side “After I learned: Human Body Poster” Diagram and color a food of your choice being rearranged throughout the body during digestion Correctly identify and label: The path food takes (organs involved in order) Where most nutrients are absorbed What happens to matter that cannot be used by the body Now you may glue the handout to Left side, Review the before the after

If time- Gizmo Competition! Try any combination of organs, small organs, or food choices to try and get the highest percentage of nutrients (calories) absorbed. Water absorbed does not count, we are looking for the most NUTRIENTS Show Mr. Velasquez your score- she will record the winner for each class
