The Art of Annotating First off, what is it? An annotation is a note that is made while reading any form of text, such as: Important Things/ Key ideas Interesting Things Clarifying Questions/ Answers (Think: Leveled ?s) Noting Literary Devices/Elements Defining Tricky Words “I Wonder..” Questions Opinions

Connections to the Reading Connect what you are reading to: Text to the World = How does this relate to something else in my life – (family, community, world issues, etc.) Text to Text = How does this relate to something else I’ve read? (This reminds me of a poem, a story, a song, a novel…) Text to Self = How does this relate to me? (Experiences, values, passions, etc.)

ASK QUESTIONS About historical events/people. Why is this significant? About information you don’t understand.

Where do I annotate? Write directly on the text (when allowed). *On post-it notes throughout the text. *In your notebook along side the text (noting page numbers for easy referral). * = What you will use for TKAM.

Your understanding of the author’s ideas and intentions. A “GOOD” ANNOTATION WILL BALANCE written ideas composed from your own personal thoughts, connections, and ideas WITH Your understanding of the author’s ideas and intentions.

A few examples of “unproductive” annotations: Gatsby—who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn. If personality is a series of successful gestures, then there was something gorgeous about him, some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life, as if he were related to one of those intricate machines that register earthquakes ten thousand miles away (Fitzgerald 3). So, Gatsby represents what he doesn’t like. He’s good looking. Huh?

A few positive examples: This is a vocabulary word for this week. Lee uses this word to show that… The language used by the people in this town is strange. Did all southerners speak this way in the 1930s? This sentence did not make sense to me. I looked up scuppernong, but I’m still at a loss. A scuppernong is… “Scout” – our narrator, does not seem believable here because… What a beautiful metaphor! I would never think to compare the oak tree to a treasure chest. This portion of the text really shows how much love Atticus has for his children. This reminds me of my Grandpa because… Level 3 Question: Do you think this reaction is a normal one? Could this situation have been handled differently?

ANNOTATIONS - WRAP UP Underline, star, highlight, box, circle whatever words, phrases or sentences that catch your attention. Write brief comments on post-it notes or in the text about: Observations What you are reminded of Questions you have Ideas that occur to you Concepts you agree or disagree with Any connections you are making Summary comments Identify vocabulary

Now that we have an idea of what annotation is and isn’t… Let’s put it to use! Books will now be distributed and we will begin reading Ch 1 as a class. Please Note: Ch 1-3 should be read and annotated by Wednesday, February 3rd for our first Graded Discussion 3-5 annotations per chapter will suffice. Feel free to do more.

Five minutes. Once complete, please turn in all first-fives to the class bin. Staple yours together. Today will be an additional paper development day. Remember to write neatly and double space. I am here to help. You must have a completed first draft for Monday’s class. 

I will be checking your Study Guides for completion as you watch the next movie segment. Following the film, we will review SG answers and you will be able to quiz one another over vocabulary. 
