Energy in the sitting room: The aim of this lesson is to enable children to understand how electrical energy is used in their everyday lives. The specific focus of this activity is on common items that are found in the sitting room. These IWB activities can be used to promote discussion regarding which of the items use electrical energy and which do not. Through discussing and reflecting on the different scenarios in this lesson the children will be applying and developing the following skills of working scientifically - Observing Predicting Analysing (sorting and classifying) Recording and Communicating

What uses electricity? In this activity the children discuss whether or not 4 common items found in the sitting room use electrical energy. Name the items television bookshelves cushions games console Children discuss and predict whether each item uses electricity or not. Next slide reveals answers.

Were your predictions correct?

What uses electricity? In this activity the children discuss whether or not 4 further common items found in the sitting room use electrical energy. Name the items: table iPod dock lamp sofa Children discuss and predict whether the items use electrical energy or not. Next slide reveals the answers.

Were your predictions correct?

Plug or no plug? Following discussion on each item, children predict which items use a plug for electrical energy. Next slide reveals the answers.

Were your predictions correct?

Uses electricity or not? Sorting and classifying: Following discussion children predict which items go to which container. Next slide reveals the answers.

Were your predictions correct?

Find the electrical items: There are 5 items in this sitting room that use electricity lamp games console television iPod dock laptop Invite children to find the items and number them. The 5 electrical items are located on next slide.

Did you find all the items? Can you think of other items that use electricity in the sitting room?
