Scott Middle School Chromebook Distribution & Training 2016-2017

Devices Students who have a signed parent release form on file at school will be allowed to take their device home each night. Students whose parents have not signed the release form will need to leave their device at school in their 1st period classroom at the end of each day. Make sure to plug it in so it charges. The devices will be checked in at the end of each school year and reissued to the same student the following year. You will use this device for 3 years - take care of it! If a student transfers out of Scott, the device will be left in the building. Students are not allowed to personalize their devices (stickers, cases, skins, etc) A list will be sent out showing which students have returned their forms.

Devices The Chromebooks are a “web browser” device. There is no hard drive to save information. Internet traffic is always filtered by the district Teachers use Hapara, a management tool that allows them to view student screens and project work for the class to see. Google Drive and all websites visited can be accessed by your teachers and the district Students are allowed to attach a wired mouse - or use a wireless mouse use USB storage (thumbdrives, etc.) Printing is not supported students will be able to print using a desktop in the media center or at home using files saved in student Google docs

Devices Chromebooks are the property of LPS and provided for educational use only Use of the Chromebooks by students is regulated / governed by LPS Board of Education Policies and Regulations, specifically Policy 6441 (Technology Resources and Internet Safety Policy) & Regulation 6441.1 (Acceptable Use of Computers, Network, Internet and Websites) Each Chromebook is valued at $240.00 Students are responsible for damage and/or loss of the device An optional Insurance Coverage Program is available (talk to your parents about their decision) Damage as a result of gross negligence or purposeful damage will not be covered by insurance The insurance program will pay for ½ of the charges to repair or replace the device Cost is $20 yearly Be responsible and take care of your Chromebook!

Procedures & Expectations Student Movement with Chromebooks Chromebooks should remain in their carrying case in all areas of the building outside of classrooms. This includes before and after school, passing times, and at breakfast/lunch times. Chromebooks should not be taken into restrooms or locker rooms. If a student needs to use the restroom during a passing time, they should drop off their materials at their next class and check in prior to using the restroom. If a student is feeling ill and needs to see the nurse, they should leave the device in the classroom and return to pick it up when appropriate. Students should take their device home each night and bring it back to school fully charged. Students will be allowed to take their devices home over breaks. Students should not allow others to borrow or use their device. Students SHOULD NEVER share their login or password.

Procedures & Expectations Chromebooks in the Instructional Setting With the exception of PE, Chromebooks should be taken to all Academic Connection classes on a daily basis unless otherwise instructed by the teacher. PE instructors will notify students when the devices are needed for their class. When not a part of direct instruction, the Chromebook should remained closed or in its carrying case. When in use, devices should always be on a flat surface (not on laps). If the computer is not in use, the lid should be closed. If a student needs to move within the classroom, the keyboard side of the device should be held with two hands during the transition. (the screen is not a handle - never pick the device up by the screen)

Procedures & Expectations Putting the Chromebook in its case The top lid of the Chromebook should always face the side of the cae with the red tag. Not doing this will put your screen at risk for cracks. (for models new in 2016 only)

Trouble-Shooting Procedures Device is not charged Each Core classroom will have 2 Dell computers available for students to borrow during class periods. Academic Connection classrooms will have 1 Dell computer available. After asking for permission, students will plug in their device in the classroom to charge and use a loaner device for the class period only. The cords for the Dell loaner computers are compatible with student Chromebooks. At the end of the period, the student device should be fully charged. The student will return the loaner device and retrieve their own device. If the student device is not fully charged at the end of the period, the student will retrieve their device and follow the same procedure in their next class. If your team or grade level has chosen to use the Responsibility Reminder slips - please explain and show them at this time.

Trouble-Shooting Procedures Device is not working properly The student will take their device to the Media Center and fill out their own student Help Ticket. Mrs. Laney will help you if needed, - but students should do it themselves. A replacement device will be checked out to the student. Students will keep the loaner device until their own device has been returned. Filling out a Help Ticket 1. LPS homepage: type in 'stuhelp' in the search box 2. Type in ID# and Password 3. Click on New in the top left corner 4. Fill in Title - Example: screen cracked 5. Fill in a brief summary of the problem 6. Click blue Save button on bottom left Suggestion: Have them practice filling out a Help Ticket but do not click save at the end

Trouble-Shooting Procedures Damage/Loss/Theft If a device has been damaged, the student fills out a Help Ticket in the media center which gets routed to the Associate Principal (Mr. Ernst). From here, he teams with our Executive Secretary (Mrs. Fuhrer) and coordinates with Computing Services and technicians to resolve. If the computer has been lost or stolen, the student will fill out a help desk ticket in the media center and the Mr. Ernst should be notified. He will investigate and decide on the next course of action.

Chromebook Homescreen (Icons along the bottom are called the "Shelf") A. Bottom Left corner: 1. Apps launcher (magnifying glass) 2. Google 3. Gmail (remind students to check this daily) 4. Google Docs 5. YouTube - but it is disabled by the district B. Bottom Right corner: 1. Personal ID Picture - Sign out 2. Battery life 3. Wi-fi connection 4. Time Students may also see a yellow square icon after the magnifying glass. That is the HMH Player (Math Software) The shelf can be changed to another location on the homescreen. I would not encourage students to mess with their settings, other than changing their ID picture or wallpaper.

(activities that a teacher has asked you to do) Educational purposes only means a teacher has asked them to do the activity on the Chromebook.

First Time Log-In & Password Security Credentials = LPS Student login & password Student login = LPS Student ID number The LPS student ID is also the email address of the student (123456@class.lps.org)

First Time Log-In & Password Security Student passwords are private and must NEVER be shared. Teachers will refer to passwords as “silly words” If a student password has been compromised, tell a teacher or librarian immediately. The adult will assist in getting the student password changed as soon as possible.

Important Apps (click on magnifying glass to access) Files: Temporary storage space for downloaded files; may save files to be used offline Google Drive: Permanent storage for files; Access to Google Apps for Education (GAFE) - {Google Classroom, Google Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, Maps} Google Classroom: Many teachers will be using this app in their classroom to post assignments and share information

Using the Dell Chromebook Keyboard Layout You will notice that your Chromebook 11 keyboard has a few extra features to kelp make it easier for you to browse the web. The keyboard contains a dedicated search key and a new row of web shortcut keys. A standard USB keyboard can also be used with the Chromebook, using the same keyboard shortcuts. Note: Be aware that the Power Button for the system is the key at the right hand side corner of the top row of keys, when looking at an actual keyboard.
