Causes of prejudice and discrimination Cultural Transmission: prejudice is transmitted from generation to generation through family/media Group Identification Theory: prejudices start when pride in your own group goes too far Frustration-aggression hypothesis: prejudices develop in response to people’s need to cope with the frustration in their lives.

Solutions THINK CRITICALLY (work in groups of 4-5) Create a solution for prejudice/discrimination based on one of the theories Can be a policy for employers, law for a state, requirement for families, requirement for the media , curriculum standard for teachers, etc. Cultural Transmission: prejudice is transmitted from generation to generation through family/media Group Identification Theory: prejudices start when pride in your own group goes too far Frustration-aggression hypothesis: prejudices develop in response to people’s need to cope with the frustration in their lives. Write down your answer. Discuss questions 1-3 on handout after. Look at the census from 1890-2010 13
