Preparing your article Promoting your article Today’s presentation Preparing your article Promoting your article Today I’m going to talk about steps you can take to make your research more discoverable when you are preparing to submit your paper to a journal and what you can do to promote your research once it has been published.

Preparing your article Title and abstract are two of the most important tools you have Use clear and correct language throughout your paper Add keywords to your paper Graphical abstracts Title and abstract are two of the most important tools we have because they tell our readers exactly what to expect when they download our article. Correct terminology allows other researchers to find your paper more easily Add relevant keywords to your paper as this metadata is how search engines categorize your paper and enables other researchers to find it through online searches. This includes labelling all figures with descriptive keywords. Graphical abstracts allow readers to see what your article is about at a glance

Example: Injury Simple, descriptive title Short, clear abstract Keywords include: Diagnostic techniques & procedures Radiography Fractures Let’s look at an example from Injury This article is one of the most shared articles on social media published in this journal It’s got a simple, descriptive title – says what it does on the tin. As someone who isn’t a surgeon, it’s easy for me to tell what this paper is about from just the first few lines. The abstract has been structured so readers know exactly what the authors found – reading the article itself will be a deeper dive into the literature review, methods and findings It includes keywords that tell researchers whether or not this paper is relevant for them. Pelvis Physical examination

Activity: 2 minutes Talk to the person next to you about your paper Come up with three keywords you would use when you submit your paper to a journal Just to make sure you’re not going to sleep – talk to the person next to you about your paper. Either the one you have with you or one you have read recently. Come up with three keywords you would use when you submit your paper to a journal.

Keywords in image captions Helps readers understand the significance of the image or figure Helps search engines determine how relevant your image is Helps researchers understand what s important or significant about your image or figure The more relevant a search engine thinks an image is, the higher up the search rankings it appears, making your article more discoverable

Graphical abstracts Summarize your article in one clear image Great for sharing on social media A graphical abstract can catch a reader’s attention without them even having to read your introduction. They should very simply explain what your article is about. This can be useful if you are working in a area with a lot of crossover into other subject areas as more people will see how your research is relevant to them. Graphical abstracts are also great for catching people’s attention if you share the published version of your paper on social media. Targeting the lymphatics using dendritic polymers (dendrimers), Lisa M. Kaminskasa, Christopher J.H. Porter Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews, http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.addr.2011.05.016

Promoting your article Link to your paper online Social media Conferences Media departments So, what do you do once your article has been published? Increase visibility for your research in the following ways.

Link to your paper online Search engines feed off connections between web pages. Linking to the published version of your paper online pushes it further up the search rankings and means more people are likely to read it. This can include your university website, especially if you have a student page you can update. You may also want to contact your university media department with a short descrption of the research that you have published. Universities are always very keen to promote research that they have funded. Do you write a blog? Would your readers also be interested in your research paper? Post a link It is always best to post links rather than actual content – search engines prioritise websites with a lot of traffic in their results and it means that anyone who cites your article will be citing the official version of record.

Social media Share links to your paper – research papers have an average of 1 mention every 7 seconds across social media, news and blogs Build a community of researchers in your field by following and retweeting their posts – they may do the same for you! Connect with potential collaborators More researchers are using social media to find research articles – every day, scholarly articles receive 12,000 new mentions across social media, news and blogs: that’s one mention every seven seconds Add links to your articles, also in relevant groups Add images Add videos, AudioSlides Reposition the publication section

Activity: 2 minutes Talk to the person next to you Write a tweet to promote your article Remember: 280 characters maximum Activity time again! Remember the article you discussed earlier? This time I’d like you to talk about what you would say if you were writing a tweet about that article and share with each other.

Conferences Great opportunity to network with peers and established researchers – connect with potential collaborators at division meet-ups Submit a poster or an abstract to present at the conference based on your research Stay on top of up-and-coming research in your field

ORCID Register with www.orcid.org Once your paper has been published - by updating your SCOPUS and ORCID author profiles you make sure all your articles are connected to your own profile (and not someone else's!)
