Collaboration is required with ETSI BRAN to ensure 802 Collaboration is required with ETSI BRAN to ensure 802.11ax achieves its potential as next gen Wi-Fi Situation Complication Answer ETSI BRAN has developed EN 301 893, which regulates operation in the 5 GHz band in Europe … … but the current version of EN 301 893 is problematic for 802.11ax performance & spatial reuse, globally … although the planned revision of EN 301 893 provides an opportunity to better enable 802.11ax Call to action: Please actively participate in the Coexistence SC to help 802.11ax achieve its full potential! Andrew Myles, Cisco

ETSI BRAN has developed EN 301 893, which regulates operation in the 5 GHz band in Europe For the last two years, ETSI BRAN has been revising EN 301 893 to align it with the RE-Directive in Europe, particularly Article 3.2: Radio equipment shall be so constructed that it both effectively uses and supports the efficient use of radio spectrum in order to avoid harmful interference The latest version of EN 301 893 is now in operation, and promotes coexistence between multiple technologies in 5 GHz by specifying: LBT same as EDCA … and TxOPs similar to EDCA … with an ED-only (-72dBm) mechanism applicable to all technologies … or an PD/ED (-82dBm/-62dBm) mechanism applicable to 802.11 Note: the 802.11 exception does not apply to 802.11ax Andrew Myles, Cisco

The current version of EN 301 893 is problematic for 802 The current version of EN 301 893 is problematic for 802.11ax performance & spatial reuse, globally The current version of EN 301 893 will probably result in reasonable coexistence between 802.11a/n/ac and LAA However, EN 301 893 has some potential serious problems in the context of 802.11ax EN 301 893’s PD/ED requirements have a potential impact on 802.11ax such that it might have less performance than 802.11ac 802.11ax is required to use an ED of -72 dBm Whereas 802.11ac can use an ED of -62 dBm EN 301 893’s PD/ED requirements mean that 802.11ax will be unable to use its new colour based spatial reuse mechanism There are no exceptions to the rule for a PD of -82 dBm Even worse, the impact of EN 301 893 is not just limited to Europe, with many countries adopting the European rules Andrew Myles, Cisco

The upcoming revision of EN 301 893 provides an opportunity to better enable 802.11ax ETSI BRAN has just adopted a WI to revise EN 301 893, with anything related to Article 3.2 of the RE-Directive within scope There is also a desire to end up with a “technology neutral” standard The revision provides the IEEE 802.11 WG with an opportunity to propose refinements to EN 301 893 IEEE 802.11 WG has already asked ETSI BRAN to allow 802.11ax (and any other technology) to use the same ED/PD mechanisms as 802.11ac, thus solving the performance issue Coexistence SC has started discussing ways to enable spatial re-use without diminishing the “fair” coexistence enforced by EN 301 893 Alternatively, IEEE 802.11 WG could ask ETSI BRAN to significantly loosen the requirements in EN 301 893 This approach is preferred by some in the Coexistence SC because it enables less constrained innovation Andrew Myles, Cisco

Call to action: Please actively participate in the Coex SC to help 802 Call to action: Please actively participate in the Coex SC to help 802.11ax achieve its full potential! Please participate in Coexistence SC if you are … Interested (in the short term) in engaging with ETSI BRAN on the EN 301 893 revision, to either: Refine the rules to enable 802.11ax … with a “fair” coexistence bias Loosen the rules to enable 802.11ax … with an innovation bias Interested (in the longer term) in promoting “fair” coexistence in multi-technology environments in collaboration with other SDOs/ITAs eg 3GPP for LAA, eLAA, feLAA & NR; MulteFire Alliance for MulteFire If the Coexistence SC does not proactively address these issues … … there is a risk 802.11ax will not achieve its potential as the basis of the next generation of Wi-Fi!
