Animal Cell

Cell Membrane outer boundary of the cell semi-permeable barrier regulates whether substances can enter or leave the cell

Nucleus The nucleus contains a fine network of chromatin which is deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) associated with particular proteins.

Ribosomes Ribosomes provide a surface location for the assembly of amino acids into proteins. Ribosomes are constructed of protein and ribosomal ribonucleic acid (r-RNA). When ribosomes are attached to endoplasmic reticulum, the endoplasmic reticulum is called rough or granular endoplasmic reticulum.

Rough Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum Endoplasmic Reticulum a network of internal cell membranes. many reactions that occur in the cell do so on the surface of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (e.g.: synthesis of lipid).

Golgi Apparatus This is a membrane structure with vesicles for sorting proteins. Once proteins are sorted, they are placed into vesicles to be transported to particular locations in the cell.

Mitochondrion rod-shaped organelle with a double outer membrane. contains enzymes to create an energy storage molecule called ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Oxygen is required for the enzyme systems to function.

Lysosomes Peroxisomes small vesicles containing acid and digestive enzymes that breakdown bacteria, debris from dead cells, and non-functioning organelles from the same cell. Peroxisomes similar to lysosomes except they contain enzymes that are primarily hydrogen peroxide, which is toxic to the cell.
