Presentation transcript:

Mr. Thompson English I and II T. Wingate Andrews High School Thompsb2@gcsnc.com www.mrthompsonsela.weebly.com As you enter the classroom, I would like you to write down my email address, my class website, and the three things that you believe to be the most important guidelines to follow in order to successfully learn what you must learn to pass my class. Make sure to explain why you believe what you believe.

Seating will be assigned, and reassigned, as needed.

Cell Phones and Other Technology See it, hear it, take it.  Unless I explicitly provide you with permission to use your technology during class, this includes earbuds or earphones, cell phones, and laptops, then it must be put away as you walk through my door.  If it is taken, it will be given back at the end of the class. Cell Phones and Other Technology

Don't interfere with the learning of others. Guideline(s)

This semester we will be reexamining and refining skills learned in previous courses. This process will be completed through the analysis of more complex texts, problem based learning, and the implementation of new tools to help you learn how to better understand grade-level material. Semester’s Material

Following Guidelines will result in: A stress free learning environment A pleasant and orderly classroom atmosphere  Periodic rewards Following Guidelines will result in:

Not Following Guidelines will result in: Non-verbal Warning Verbal warning or conference with student Call home Office Referral Not Following Guidelines will result in:

Any student who uses profanity, fights, damages school property (this includes the property of the teacher and other students), or is disrespectful (as defined by me) will be referred to an administrator immediately. Severity Clause

Classroom Procedures Entering the Room Please enter quietly. Sit in your assigned seat. Review the agenda and read the day's assigned objective on the board. Complete the assigned bell-work. (You are tardy if you are not in your seat when the tardy bell rings.) Classroom Procedures

Classroom Procedures When you are tardy Block One: If it is later than 8:50 I will mark you tardy. If it is later than 9:30, you must report to Mrs. Cranford for a note. Blocks Two and Three: Enter quietly and I will mark you tardy. NOTE: Three tardies will result in an office referral. Classroom Procedures

Classroom Procedures Getting your attention T= Timeout and look at me (everyone forms a T) Sideways Thumb= Sidebar conversation (let your neighbors know that their conversations need to stop so that they don’t get in trouble) “Foul”= Someone has said something disrespectful and they owe you or someone else two affirmations General rule of thumb= Follow the Golden Rule and there won't be any problems. Classroom Procedures

Classroom Procedures Paper Heading MLA Format The top left side of your paper should state your first and last name, my name, your class block, and the date. Label ALL of your assignments this way. Classroom Procedures

Classroom Procedures MLA Paper Heading Example Student name: John Smith Teacher name: Mr. Thompson Block number: Block One Today's Date:   1 January 2017 (This label is to be put on the first four lines of your paper.) Classroom Procedures

Classroom Procedures After an absence If you miss a day of school, or if you are late, it is YOUR responsibility to contact me for your make-up work. It is not fair to me or your peers for me to freely accept late work unless you were absent when it was assigned. If you were absent when it was assigned, you have five school days to submit your work for full credit. After five days you will be required to write and staple the "Late Work Explanation" to all of your assignments. You must do the same thing for all assignments turned in late when you were in class while they were assigned. Due dates are called such for a reason. I am more than happy to provide extra credit to students who have submitted all assignments on time and put in a sufficient amount of effort. However, make sure that if you ask for extra credit you have done your best in class and attended after school tutoring sessions. Classroom Procedures

Classroom Procedures Finish Classwork Early? Work on any unfinished English assignments Read your Self-selected novel Review Vocabulary Words DO NOT work on other teachers' assignments in my classroom without my permission (they are likely to be taken) Classroom Procedures

Classroom Procedures Restroom Breaks These breaks are to be taken during your breaks between classes. You have approximately an hour of free time between class changes and lunch to meet with friends, speak to teachers, and take care of any other necessary business that you may have. If an emergency arises you are permitted three documented restroom breaks per semester. If you must exceed three then you need to provide a note from home explaining the reason for your absence from my class. Classroom Procedures

Classroom Procedures Classroom Discussions PLEASE participate. I want to hear what you have to say. However, all questions during a discussion must be on topic. It is also important to wait for your turn to speak. Classroom Procedures

Classroom Procedures Moving Around the Classroom Only one person can be out of his/her seat at a time unless otherwise instructed by me. Do not ask to leave your seat during a classroom discussion unless it is an emergency. If you do not have a pencil, you should know this prior to the start of class. Should this be the case I want you to either borrow a pencil from a friend or borrow a colored pencil from the table by the door. Classroom Procedures

Classroom Procedures Class Dismissal I have the school bell schedule posted on the wall. I do not need to be reminded of the end of class. Please do not begin packing your things until I have finished my lesson. Classroom Procedures

Classroom Procedures Special Procedures These will be introduced on an "as needed" basis. Library/ Media Center Distance Learning Lab Special Guests Progress Reports Working Cooperatively Fire Drill Intercom Announcements Assemblies Substitute Teacher Classroom Procedures

Classroom Procedures Let’s Wrap this Up! I am very excited about this semester and all we have to accomplish, and I hope you are too.  Always remember that you are the driving force behind accomplishing whatever you want to do with your life. Your success in my class has a direct correlation with how much effort you put into your work.  Please let me know if you ever have any questions.  I am here to help YOU succeed!  I know we are going to have a fantastic semester!
