Quick Hack-Design-Pitch Competition RETHINKING INNOVATION IN QUALITY & SAFETY Join us at Session 5 on Thursday, June 1st from 9am-10:30am y 1st Annual QSEN Quick Hack-Design-Pitch Competition Session 5 Top 3 finalists from Session 5 will pitch to a live audience in the final plenary for a cash prizes! Use of laptops and phones encouraged for exercise! Are you full of ideas about how to move quality and safety education into practice for a 5-Generational Workforce? Brought to you by: The QSEN Innovation & Entrepreneurship Taskforce

Overview of time allotted (90 Minutes) 5-10 minutes introduction to BioDesign Process & discuss need specifications 30 minutes brainstorm ideas and select a concept 10 minutes what is the market size for this area 10 minutes what is your innovation 10 minutes potential barriers to entry (competition, regulatory) 10 minutes strategy for getting your product into practice settings

House Rules 1. Include everyone. Project diversity occurs because of the differences in talent at the table 2. Stop everything else. “I hear hackathons are sacred here,” we stare them down and say, “yes, they are, and we expect you to contribute.” No distractions, be present   3. Unleash and direct creativity. Enough space to do what you’re passionate about and 2) create enough structure to stimulate ideas around it 4. Celebrate each other through hacking. In the end, be able to say “Wow- I would never have thought of that!” and then realize that as a team member “I don’t have to go it alone.”

Identify, Invent, Implement Getting started … Introduction to the Biodesign approach for a needs analysis/problem identification & specifications Discuss the fundamentals of establishing a need On the spot-brain storm and vote on a need (2 questions- Hack 1) Overview of innovation process Provide personal example Ideas for tools, prototypes, and app features: flush out a range of projects that show off our skills

BioDesign Three stages of BioDesign – where does innovation fit in? Identify Needs finding Needs screening Needs selection and specification development Invent Brainstorming Concept Screening Concept Selection Implement Concept development all the way through to market Arriving at a new solution to a need

What is innovation? Innovation is an outcome, not just an activity Innovation IS MORE THAN… … inventing … coming up with good ideas … problem solving or creativity … advanced technology … design Adoption is the innovation scorecard 93 - 95% Failure <1% Blockbuster Innovation 5-7% Modest Success Launch $ ROI Copyright © 2011 The Inovo Group, LLC

Innovation Begin with the end in mind What you …determines do here… adoption here Discovery Development Commercialization Connect to customers – create market pull Translate into compelling offerings Understand demand and design spaces Design Launch

Medical innovation is not that unique BioDesign process has application in many areas It starts with Problem identification Problem definition The solution process ensues thereafter … … but is only as good as the problem defined

BioDesign structure Changing context requires a systems view Knowledge Critical Thinking Skills Problem Curiosity

Some terms Ideation, Innovation, Entrepreneurship Ideation/ Invention is the process of generating ideas to solve a problem Innovation is the process of arriving at a new solution to a need Entrepreneurship is the practice of delivering a new solution to a market

Context Some things change, others don’t About 100 years ago … The average life expectancy in the U.S. was 47 years. A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars. The average wage in the U.S. was 22 cents per hour. The average U.S. worker made between $200 and $400 per year.   A competent accountant could expect to earn $2,000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year. Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.     Five leading causes of death in the U.S. were: Pneumonia and influenza Tuberculosis Diarrhea Heart disease Stroke Wasn’t technology supposed to help?

Current state of the problem What Do We Need? The Need Need Current state of the problem Existing treatments Stakeholder evaluation Market analysis Though this really has application in many disciplines

Determining a Sufficient Need Need Specification: What should the solution ideally address? What are the constraints? Determining a Sufficient Need What you have been given What solutions do current competition provide? Reassess the need- break it down into multiple points or from multiple angles Is there a gap left? What research you have to do?

Let’s Get Started!!!! What is the need? A Problem: Intracranial Pressure (ICP) monitoring can be an issue A Need: A non-invasive way to measure ICP in Motor-Vehicle Accident Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury It’s important to help people who don’t come in with an idea find something they’re excited about. Conversely, it’s crucial to avoid restricting scope too much. In the past, we’ve managed this balance through guided brainstorms and iterative prize categories.

In the past, we’ve managed this balance through guided brainstorms and iterative prize categories. The Need: A viable commercial product that can move QSEN Competencies from academic settings to practice settings? Barriers/Myths: - Healthcare Institutions and nurses say "we already do this" - Lack of understanding of what the competencies are - Think they have to incorporate All 138 KSAs Key things to consider: ~ 5 generational workforce ~ Be sure to share why this is a problem!

What is Your Innovation Product Business? Let’s Get Started!!!! 10 min Brainstorm ideas and select a concept. What is Your Innovation Product Business? What is the market size for this area? How many hospitals exist? How many hospitals do you know of that could use your product? Are you competing with other companies? It’s important to help people who don’t come in with an idea find something they’re excited about. Conversely, it’s crucial to avoid restricting scope too much. In the past, we’ve managed this balance through guided brainstorms and iterative prize categories.
