President Adams and the XYZ Affair.

Your first 15 minutes. Sections 6.1 and 6.2, vocab and questions 3-5, are due Friday. Spend the first 15 minutes working on those. Put them on the same sheet of paper.

Washington’s Farewell Address He warns of us of two things… Don’t get involved in European Affairs Don’t start political parties

Things were different back then… Under the original constitution, electors would cast two votes for President. Whomever got a majority would be President, whomever got the second most would be Vice President.

Beware Political Parties….. Ya, about that….. So, despite Washington’s warnings of staying clear of political parties…..we had political parties. Federalists- Strong central government Democratic-Republicans (formally Anti-Federalists) - Weak central government

Who ran for election in 1796? Federalists nominate John Adams and Thomas Pinkney Democratic Republicans nominate Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr

Who wins? Well, Adams got the majority, and Thomas Jefferson got the second most. That meant that we had a Federalist President, and a Democratic Republican Vice President.

The XYZ Affair France was becoming a big problem for Adams. The Revolution was in full swing and things were really getting out of control. Britain declared war on France, and we are caught in the middle of two allies.

The French The French began intercepting the trade ships we were sending to Britain, and taking all of our stuff. Adams sends some American diplomats over to Paris to see what kind of peace deal they can make.

XYZ Our diplomats wait for weeks in Paris before the French leader will meet with them. This is terribly insulting. Then, three unnamed French agents (XYZ) tell our guys that in order to make a deal, the French leader needs 250,000 personally, and France needs 10 million dollars.

Adams’ response No way. We are not “paying to play” with the French. Adams tells Congress to cancel all treaties with the French and give the ok for our ships to start intercepting their ships.

The Alien and Sedition Acts The Democratic Republicans were strong supporters of the French and they did not like what Adams was doing. They strongly criticized his actions, causing a lot of problems for Adams. In response, Adams gets the Federalist Congress to pass a series of laws known was the Alien and Sedition Acts.

What they did… They make it illegal to criticize the president, in print or even out loud. They make it legal to arrest any “alien” (an immigrant who was not yet a citizen) and throw them in jail. This caused a pretty severe backlash against Adams, and ultimately cost him the election of 1800. This is the end of Unit 3!
