Higher physical education Planning Paper – Question 1.b.

Question 1.b. This part of your Planning Paper is worth 4 Marks (4% of your overall grade). Now you have identified your two challenges and how they might impact your special performance, you now need to address them. In other words… "In order to meet these challenges, I am going to…"

What's the question? Question 1.b. Identify the actions you will take to meet each of the challenges in Question 1.a. Explain why these challenges are important.

Let's take a closer look at 1.b. In order to access the four marks, I must: Identify TWO different actions/strategies that I can use to meet my challenges (one for each strategy). Describe, briefly, what these actions/strategies involve. ***If you used these actions/strategies successfully, what will you potentially be able to do or prevent from happening in your special performance?***

Task 1 For each of the challenges listed below, identify ONE action/step/strategy that could be used to minimise it's impact on a performance: A lack of speed in a singles tennis player. A lack of height in a Goal Keeper in Netball. High levels of anxiety in a hockey Goal Keeper. A gymnast up against a much stronger performer. A lack of concentration in a Basketball player.

A task for another day… Taking each of those actions/steps/strategies in Task 1, could you describe what they would all look or sound like if you were to see someone using them before or during their performance? Could you describe them in one or two, short and concise sentences?

The main ingredient… The main part of this question is…"Explain why these actions are appropriate." This is where you will access your marks. Think about it like so… If I use this strategy successfully before/during my performance, I will be able to…" COMPLETE THE SENTENCE ONE, TWO OR EVEN THREE TIMES FOR EACH STRATEGY!

HERE'S A WEE EXAMPLE FOR YOU... Activity: Archery Challenge: Lack of confidence (mental sub-factor) Strategy: Positive Self-Talk Description: "Positive self-talk involves blocking out all negative thoughts and distractions that are out with my control. Instead, I make myself aware of everything I can control and praise myself every time I perform successfully." Explanation: "If I use positive self-talk successfully, I will be able to feel more relaxed and focussed prior to my first few shots. This will lead to fewer mistakes and a higher chance of scoring more points with each arrow."

Task 2 In pairs, take a look at the following scenario. Activity: Volleyball Challenge: Playing alongside people I don’t know and haven’t trained or performed with previously. Action/Strategy: Team Talk prior to the warm-up. This will be delivered by me, the Captain and the Vice-Captain. We will spend thirty minutes in the Changing Room sharing our names, experiences in volleyball, our strengths and weaknesses as well as discussing the tactics and set plays we are going to use throughout the match. All team members will have the opportunity to input into this team talk. Explain two things(!) this might help the athlete do or prevent from happening within their upcoming performance.

Any questions? Planning Paper (8 Marks) Thursday 15th February 2018 Open Book Assessment – Plan and prepare prior to these dates! Bring the relevant resources with you on the day. Aim to write concisely by keeping your sentences short and following the steps outlined in the PowerPoints. Relate EVERYTHING to your SPECIAL PERFORMANCE!
