Senior research practice North Korea Example

Plagiarism! What is it? Can you do it unintentionally? Can you do it even if you cite? Can you plagiarize yourself?

Research Notes Don’t ever copy and paste unless you’re planning on quoting. Read a paragraph of a source and then look away to take notes – only checking specific names and dates. (Use index cards) Look up words you don’t know, and use synonyms rather than using the unknown words in your notes. Take notes using bullets, not complete sentences. If you took more than 3 or 4 words in a row, you must quote it.

Practice- North Korea Research Question: Where does the tension between the U.S. and North Korea come from, and where do we stand today? Sources: https://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/2792.htm https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp /2017/06/14/the-intensifying-strangeness-of-u-s- north-korea-relations/?utm_term=.6bdc514980e0

Parenthetical Citations and Leads When answering a research question or writing a paper with more than one source, it needs to be clear what information is coming from where. Works-Cited Page isn’t enough. Use leads – According to…, Mrs. Hepler in her article entitled, “blah blah blah”, states… Use Parenthetical Citations – (Author, pg. #) or for web sources, use the first thing that appears in the full citation (author name, article name, journal name, web page name, etc.)

Sample Paragraph Ironically, the relationship between North Korea and the United States began peacefully with the 1882 Treaty of Peace, Amity, Commerce, and Navigation. They continued this way until the end of WWII. Japan took control of Korea in 1905, so when the Japanese surrendered in 1945, Korea split at the 38th parallel. The Soviet Union took control of the North, known as the DPRK, and the U.S. took control of the South, the ROK (“U.S. Relations with North Korea”). The relationship has been deteriorating since then. Most recently, according to Tharoor from The Washington Post, the U.S. is currently dealing with threats from North Korea, including one to invade New York City. As a result, President Trump is losing patience and losing faith in the U.S. plan to be patient. Tharoor even went as far as to call North Korea a “major irritant”.

Independent Practice Write at least two paragraphs in response to the research question. I’m looking for… Paraphrasing Quotes when appropriate Parenthetical References and Leads Citations: Tharoor, Ishaan. “The intensifying strangeness of U.S.-North Korea relations.” The Washington Post, 14 June, 2017. Israel/ Palestine Conflict Research Questions: Where/ What is Palestine? What started the Israeli/ Palestinian conflict and what is the current state of things? What is the significance of the United States recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel?

Independent Practice Write at least two paragraphs in response to the 3 research questions. Use at least 2 sources I’m looking for… Paraphrasing Quotes when appropriate Parenthetical References and Leads Works Cited Page (MLA)

Citing a Video When: How: When the video offers a first-hand witness. When someone with credibility/expertise is speaking. When the video clip offers something the article or another text hasn’t. How: Last Name, First Name (of author). “Title of Video.” Website title. Sponsor, Update date. Medium. Date of Access.

Video Citation Example During a press conference in Tel Aviv, Trump stated “It would be folly to assume that repeating the exact same formula would now produce a different or better result” (Landler).
