Rosenbergs September 3, 1949 – soviets test atomic bomb 1950- German born physicist Klaus Fuchs admits giving information to Soviet Union Ethel and Julius Rosenberg denied they took part in the Fuchs case They believed they were targets due to being Jewish and holding radical political beliefs Both found guilty and sentenced to death
McCarthy Launches “Witch Hunt” Senator Joseph McCarthy from Wisconsin Early 1950’s makes unsupported accusations on suspected Communists (McCarthyism) Made claims of suspected Communists in the State department and in the Democratic Party yet never produced a single name
Downfall 1954- McCarthy makes accusations against the Army!!! This results in televised Senate investigations America sees McCarthy as a bully and loses public support He dies 3 years later……
