General Weather Symbol Rules There are symbols that can show many different meteorological observations. In our class we will just focus on those we can measure at school. Temp (°F) Wind Speed and Direction Current Weather Cloud Cover Press Trend Dew Point (°F)

Cloud Cover Sometimes expressed as a percentage To measure cloud cover we will be simply looking up at the sky and estimating the fraction that is covered by clouds Ex: ???

Wind Speed and Direction A line coming from the center circle shows the direction the wind is coming from The number of barbs/flags tells the wind speed ½ barb = ~5kn 1 barb = ~10kn 1 Flag = ~50kn

Temperature and Dew Point Both Temperature and Dew Point will be expressed in Fahrenheit Temperature will be displayed in the upper left corner Dew Point will be displayed in the lower left corner REVIEW: What does the Dew Point mean? If it is really dry outside, will the dew point be high or low?

Current Weather Remember that weather is the state of the atmosphere at a given time and place. Each symbol represents a moment in time What symbol would a station located here use?

Pressure Trend We will not be directly measuring atmospheric pressure in class, but we will simply observe the current trend. You will simply be recording whether the pressure has risen or fallen over the last 24 hours REVIEW: What does falling pressure tell us? What does rising pressure tell us? Pressure Rising: Pressure Falling: Pressure Stable:

Extra Information There are weather symbols for many other observations such as: Cloud Type Visibility Could base height Amount of precipitation Barometric Pressure Each circle represents a specific weather station Example: 74

*Is this high or low pressure? *Where is the center?
