Understanding Intellectual Property A book full of ideas What is intellectual property? Intellectual property is something that we own, but usually it cannot be held. It is what we create in our minds. The company’s brand name A famous company What are some examples of intellectual property? Designs for logos and trademarks Inventions Trade secrets Artistic works like paintings, songs, books, etc.

Protection of Intellectual Property Rights How are different kinds of intellectual property protected? A book that is protected by copyright Brands and logos are protected by trademarks. Inventions are protected by patents. Trade secrets are protected by agreements. Works of art are protected by copyrights. A design protected by a trademark Patents protect inventions. Agreeing to work together

The Job of an Intellectual Property Lawyer Creating a contract What is the job of an intellectual property lawyer? They do everything that is needed to protect intellectual property. This includes writing contracts, filing for patents, giving advice to clients, and representing clients in court.

Intellectual Property Lawyers Write Contracts Carefully checking a contract Why is it helpful to have intellectual property lawyers write contracts or agreements? The wording for any agreement or contract should be exact. It should be specific. In fact, the more details it has, the better. This helps protect the intellectual property. Tearing up a bad contract What is a loophole in a contract? Finding a problem When details are left out or are not clearly explained, a loophole then exists in a contract. People who find such loopholes can then steal intellectual property without actually breaking the law.

How to Be an Intellectual Property Lawyer University students A lecture hall Studying past court cases Focusing on intellectual property law How can a person become an intellectual property lawyer? Get a degree in science, math, history, social science, or art. Take a test to get into law school. Focus on intellectual property law in law school. Take a bar exam to become certified.

What is difficult about becoming an intellectual property lawyer? Not an Easy Job What is difficult about becoming an intellectual property lawyer? A lawyer must learn how to think like a lawyer. You have to read a lot to become a lawyer! A law student in a law library How does this happen? It happens by a lot of reading. Law students study court cases to learn the facts, the arguments, and the decision the judge made in each case and why. In this way, they learn how to apply the law.
