BLACK & WHITE BHS Photography 2 Term 2

“Black and white is an attitude, a different way of looking at things “Black and white is an attitude, a different way of looking at things. I knew many photographers like Cartier-Bresson and Robert Doisneau who preferred to work in black and white. There is an indescribable magic in black and white that is impossible to explain, it is the shadows and the highlights, in the details and in the mystique. Black and white treads that fine line between reality and fantasy.” ~Toros of Toroslab

I find the creative process with black & white images is so artistic I find the creative process with black & white images is so artistic. It’s like molding clay – you can shape it into a myriad of shapes. Black & white images can be strong, high contrast & powerful – or they can soft, gentle & subtle.

Black & White is also called monochrome Black & White is also called monochrome. Monochrome: a painting, drawing, or photograph in a single hue

Many photographers choose to photograph in BW today A good black & white photo is just as powerful if not more, than a color photo. It should be taken or edited with purpose. However, not all subjects are suitable for black & white. Certain photos rely on color for impact. For example Steve McCurry’s “Afghan Girl” portrait. The rich colors are an intrinsic part of the image’s power.
