“Ashputtle” First Reading * Use a star for significant information, devices, and strategies you notice. ! Use an exclamation point to indicate what you feel strongly about in the article. ? Use a question mark next for parts that are confusing or next to any information that you’d like to explore further.

“Ashputtle” Second Reading Use A to label different archetypes or elements of an archetypal narrative (like repetition of tasks, punishment of evil, etc.) N Use N to label when nature is used as motif. C Use C to label characterization.

Short Answer Example What is the function of nature as motif in “Ashputtle”? In “Ashputtle” by Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm, Ashputtle is often seen communing with nature. The purpose of nature as a motif is to contribute to the reader’s understanding of Ashputtle as a moral and righteous character. Even after her mother’s death, “she went on being good and saying her prayers.” She “wept and prayed” by her mother’s grave three times a day and “when Ashputtle made a wish [a] little bird threw down what she had wished for.” Here, the Grimm brothers show that Ashputtle is as pure and innocent as nature itself.

Short Answer What cultural values was this story trying to instill in children? Use (APE) structure to answer this question. Answer: In “Ashputtle” by the Grimm brothers, the authors try to teach children that… How do you know? What does that mean?

Short Answer #2 How would you characterize the stepmother in Ashputtle? Use (APE) structure to answer this question. Answer: In “Ashputtle” by the Grimm brothers, the authors characterize the stepmother as… How do you know? What does that mean?
