OPTIC Strategy Analyzing Visuals

Why Use OPTIC?

Why Use OPTIC? -A text can be anything (speech, non-fiction piece, poem, advertisement, fiction piece, visual). -Many students panic when they have to analyze a visual (i.e. your WOD on 3D Printing). -OPTIC provides a clear strategy that explains how to look for what is important.

OPTIC Acronym

“Migrant Mother” by Dorthea Lange (1936)

OVERVIEW -What is the visual about? -What’s going on? -Brief Summary

PARTS -Break apart the image and look at its individual parts -What parts, elements, and details are important? (Colors, figures, groupings, patterns)

TITLE -What information does the title add?

INTERRELATIONSHIPS What connections can be made between the title and the parts of the visual?

CONCLUSION -Draw a conclusion about the visual as a whole by stating its theme or the argument it is making.

WHY ALL THE PARTS ARE IMPORTANT -Practice OPTIC without the title One other part missing.

HOW DOES YOUR ANALYSIS CHANGE? Title: “Bellamy Salute” Parts: What image is added?

SMALL GROUP PRACTICE Title: “The Young Lady with the Shiner” by Norman Rockwell
