STEM Fair: Materials and Step by Step Directions 5th Grade Monday Inquiry Week 6 and 7 Power point is to provide pacing. The lesson plan template provides the specific details.

Creating a Materials List Process Skill Connection: Communicating Estimating Creating a Materials List Looking at the question being put to the test, scientists must create a list of materials that they will need in order to carry out their experiment.

Log Stop Record the materials list in your log. Next to each item, record where you think we would be able to get each material. Explain WHY we need to be specific with our materials on our list. Make sure to title this entry “materials” and include the date!

Step by Step Directions Process Skill Connection: Communicating Step by Step Directions Scientists record each and every step in their experiment so that others may replicate their experiment and get similar results. First we will need to gather materials. Now what? AT: 10 minutes The teacher should chart the steps in order. When appropriate, guide students in compacting steps such as “repeat steps 3-5 for more times…” It may be helpful to leave space between each step in case additional steps may need to be added in (so skip lines). It also may be helpful to “act out” the steps as you go using other objects to represent the actual materials to help record the steps needed to carry out the experiment. Remind students that we are always thinking about being specific and clear so that others could replicate the experiment. Communicating – Giving or exchanging information verbally, orally, and/or in writing.

Your turn: Student Independent Work Log stop: Record the step by step directions. Explain why you do or do not think these directions are replicable.
