Agree or Disagree?

Agree or Disagree? Gambling should be allowed for any and all people? Why? Narcotics should be available to anyone for purchase? Alcohol should not have any types of restrictions for purchase? Common threads I heard from you: Personal choice/freedom/responsibility Potential impact on others/society Dangers associated with health/addiction

Would you… Knowingly allow your thinking to be impaired consistently in a school setting? Knowingly disrupt your sleep patterns for a brief feeling of joy that would diminish over a period of continued experience? Knowingly put yourself at risk of becoming one of the 50% of people between 12-21 that feel a lack of control over this specific aspect of their daily life?

Would you… Be surprised if I told you the average American engages in the behavior on average 221 times per day? Believe me if I told you approximately 2.3 billion people have the delivery device? Believe me if I told you approximately 10% of people could be classified as addicted?

“But this isn’t me…” Knowingly allow your thinking to be impaired consistently in a school setting? Results from experiments indicate that even when people are successful at maintaining sustained attention—as when avoiding the temptation to check their phones— the mere presence of these devices reduces available cognitive capacity. (screen up/down on/off/silent…doesn’t matter) Moreover, these cognitive costs are highest for those highest in smartphone dependence.

“But this isn’t me…” Knowingly disrupt your sleep patterns for a brief feeling of joy that would diminish over a period of continued experience? Constant tiredness, from mild to severe Irritability, temper and moodiness Loss of concentration, and in severe cases memory loss and hallucinations Loss of coordination, in severe cases the incidences of auto accidents increases with loss of sleep Problems with relationships Absenteeism and tardiness at work or school Loss of appetite or the opposite, binge-eating

“But this isn’t me…” Knowingly put yourself at risk of becoming one of the 50% of people between 12-21 that feel a lack of control over this specific aspect of their daily life? New pathologies developing: “Nomophobia” (No-Mobile-Phobia), “FOMO” (Fear Of Missing Out) – the fear of being without a cell phone, disconnected or off the Internet, “Textaphrenia” and “Ringxiety” – the false sensation of having received a text message or call that leads to constantly checking the device, and “Textiety” – the anxiety of receiving and responding immediately to text messages 91% of American owners report they won’t leave home without it 46% state they couldn’t live without it.

The Best Way to do Things Best way to tie your shoes Get a date with a boy or a girl (pick one…) To get a good night’s sleep Cure a head cold Ask your parent(s) for money Get internet followers (twitter, Instagram, whatever it is you folks are using these days…) Write a thesis statement Parallel Park Get from the Library to Spartan Gym Cooking eggs Clean your ears Get from SHS to IHS Best way to get an “A” in class

The Best Way to do Things Now, @ YOUR TABLE GROUP!!! Similar process, but you will now get a random “thing” and you will ALL need to agree as a group as to how the BEST way to perform that action is to take place. You will all need to keep track on your own paper what is happening within the group. Again, there must be CONSENSUS! Then, follow the rest of the instructions on the next slide…

The Best Way to do Things 1. In your group discuss the topic and decide on the BEST way to accomplish/do your “thing”.  Everyone in your group should write this on their own sheet of paper with the assignment title “Best Way To Do Things”   2. Explore at least two other ways to accomplish/do your “thing” Write these down on your paper. 3. In your group, discuss if in the future a better way to accomplish/do your thing may emerge? What could it be? 4. You will get to describe your group’s discussions and then defend your “best way” to the class – Be ready for them to challenge you!
