Early Cold War Fears

COMMUNISM & Containment What if it spreads? Must CONTAIN Korean War Vietnam War—officially enter in 1956 If not, fear is that Soviets & Chinese could dominate world.

Communism at HOME? Red Scare: 1947-1956 McCarthyism = “a campaign or practice that endorses the use of unfair allegations and investigations”. BECAUSE: McCarthy went on a witch hunt. Looked for communist spies in the gov—especially Dems

Cold War w/ Eisenhower 1954 = Adopt policy of Massive Retaliation—we will respond greater than their action 1955 = Soviets Launch first hydrogen bomb (i.e. Nuclear Arms Race begins) 1957—Sputnik—Soviets launch first satellite into space (we are terrified that Soviets have better missile technology) 1960= U2 Incident—US spy plane shot down by Soviets (US had promised not to have planes)
