New Year’s Resolutions: FTS for Long-Term Success Melissa Victor Totah, M.A., LPC-S, NCC Licensed Professional Counselor & Career Coach

New Year, New You = Old Approach! What are some goals you have set to become the “New You?” How many goals do you set at once? How many times have you set the same goals? How successful have you been at achieving these goals? What happens when the goals stop being new and exciting? What do you do when you start to lose momentum? How long does the “New You” actually last?

Don’t worry, we’ve all been there!

Why don’t New Year’s Resolutions last? How we FEEL: Overwhelmed by goals Drudgery of tasks Unable to prioritize - losing sight of the big picture What we THINK: “All or nothing” “Either/or” How we SHOW UP: “Under stress, we regress” – reverting to old patterns/habits when challenged The 3 Ps: perfectionism, procrastination, planning

What is FTS? Can it break the cycle? Develop new habits based on the following questions: How do you want to FEEL? What would you like for your go-to THOUGHTS to be? What patterns will you SHIFT in order to SHOW UP differently in life?

Creating a new cycle for success Feel Think Show Up

The FTS Approach: Feel – Think – Show Up FEEL the success THINK of examples SHOW UP as your best self Examine past FEARS & FAILURES Remember FLOW experiences Light your FIRE! Be with the right FRIENDS Experience the FEELINGS Understand previous TRAPS Recall successful TIMES THOUGHTS affiliated with best times TRUST in the process TALK to yourself with compassion Recognize SHAME and SELF-SABOTAGE Write your STORY SHINE your light Notice SUCCESS HABITS SHIFT your behaviors

FEEL the success When has FEAR held you back from consistently? Have you experienced FLOW in the past? What was it like? What lights a FIRE within your soul? Who are the most encouraging and inspiring FRIENDS that cheer you on? How can you see more of them and less of the ones that drain you? How do you want to FEEL by the end of 2016 and beyond?

THINK of examples How can you avoid TRAPS that have derailed you in the past? When are other TIMES that you have been successful? What are the THOUGHTS that were affiliated with past successes? How can you develop TRUST in the process? How will you TALK to yourself?

SHOW UP as your best self What situations in the past have caused you to SHUT DOWN or SELF- SABOTAGE? Tell a STORY of a time when you felt truly successful. Where do you naturally SHINE? What is one SUCCESS HABIT that you can incorporate immediately? How will you SHARE your gifts 2016 and beyond?
