Warm-up Reflect on our first Socratic Seminar, examining strengths and weaknesses. Use the following as guiding questions: What were overall strengths/weaknesses? Was there sufficient connection to the text? Explain. Was everyone respectful of others’ opinions? Did any part of it make you consider things in a new light? If so, what? Explain. Name two things that stood out and explain why.

Colon [:] Uses Before a LIST. Ex: I’m enrolled in the following classes: English, science, algebra, and math. Ex: As I walked to the store, I thought of three things I needed: apples, milk, and eggs. Between 2 sentences when the 2nd sentence explains or illustrates the first sentence. Ex: There is only one thing left to do now: Confess while you still have time. Ex: I have a question regarding the comment you made: Was that intended at me?

REMINDERS Don’t use second person! Use MLA format EXACTLY! (Follow the guidelines on your prompt.)

Essay Evaluation Read through each essay completely and then complete the following evaluation on a separate sheet of paper for each one: Refer to your essay guidelines and write in full sentences: Do they have all of the necessary parts to their body paragraphs? Evaluate each part: topic sentence, lead- in, concrete detail, commentary, closing sentences. (positives/negatives). Do they have all of the necessary parts to their introduction? Evaluate each part: hook, restate prompt, roadmap, thesis. (positives/negatives) Do they have all of the necessary parts to their conclusion? Evaluate each part: restate thesis, reflect on main ideas, general statement. (positives/negatives) What is the major strength and weakness of this paper? What grade would you give this paper?
