NordPlus Junior project 2013-2015: “Beauties of the Baltic Sea”. The second study visit in Estonia 19-21 May 2014.

The Baltic Sea The Baltic Sea is a brackish sea with both salt and fresh water. It doesn`t have big tides, and the sea water is low in salinity.

Estonia is located on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea with nearly 3,800 km of coastline and nearly 700 km of land border.

Estonian flag has blue colour on it. One of the reasons why this colour was chosen is the following: blue sky above the native land or the reflection of the Baltic Sea.

In 2014, Estonia is the coordinator of Nordic - Baltic cooperation. 2014 is the year of the Baltic Sea in Estonia. 1,224 km-long natural gas pipelines through the Baltic Sea

Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Germany, Denmark and Sweden divide the Baltic Sea

More than 85 million people live close to the Baltic Sea and this area is of great importance, not only in terms of environment and economy, but also in terms of energy and transport.

but in winter, the ice is thick enough to support roads.

The frozen Baltic Sea creates the longest ice road in Europe, (26 km), connecting Estonian mainland and second-largest island Hiiumaa.

WE HAVE PORTS IN TALLINN

Old City Marina is in the very heart of Tallinn.

Paldiski Harbour is the second cargo port located 45 km west of Tallinn.

Muuga Harbour is the biggest cargo harbour in Estonia located 17 km east of Tallinn.

Kuivastu Harbour serves passenger ferries. It has places for 50 vessels.

A lot of people go to the Estonian islands and have a rest in seaside resorts. The main islands of Estonia are Saaremaa, Hiiumaa, Muhu, Vormsi, Kassari, Kihnu, and so on.

Saaremaa is the largest island in Estonia, 2, 673 km².

Hiiumaa is the second island (989 km²) of Estonia Hiiumaa is the second island (989 km²) of Estonia. It is located in the Baltic Sea, north of the island of Saaremaa.

Muhu is the third island in the Baltic Sea, 198 km² belonging to Estonia, after Saaremaa and Hiiumaa.
