Ions

Ions are charged particles The charge on an ion is the DIFFERENCE between the p+ and e- Chloride ion General term for negative ion = Anion

General term for positive ion = Cation

Ions form because atoms want to have a full valence shell (outer energy level). like the nearest noble gas. They will do this the easiest way possible.

Valence Electrons Number of electrons in the outer shell of an atom Full outer shell One or two

Bromine? Potassium? Oxygen? Aluminum? How do the following form ions, and what’s their notation? Remember this? p+? no? e-? Bromine? Potassium? Oxygen? Aluminum?

Ions vs. Atoms (and their isotopes)
