Self-Image and Self-Improvement Learning Targets: I can define self image. I can identify ways to increase one’s self image.

Ground Rules Only one person talks at a time Everyone should have the opportunity to be heard & participate Students are free to express opinions, respect each other, listen and share ideas openly Anything discussed is confidential unless hurting self/others (would need to be reported) Any other ideas needed…………..

Define Self Image PG 12: Name 3 adjectives or short phases that best describe you How I see myself with Friends, at School, at Home, in General Are you happy with the phrases or words you chose? Do you think the adjectives you selected gives a complete picture of who you are or what you are like? WE ARE ALL COMPLEX INDIVIDUALS! What is Self Image?? –table talk with share out

Formation of Self Self- Image is formed through our past experiences – successes and failures. It can also be influenced by what others think of us. Describe one or two past experiences that have affected the way you feel about yourself (failed science test, praised at dance, injured at football) Share with table group- any volunteer to share with class?

Self-Image & Behavior We are what we become or believe to be: Failure in math- poor math student See ourselves as a poor athlete- will perform poorly Self- Image is also important because if affects how good we feel about ourselves. People who feel good about themselves are more confident, more satisfied, more successful, do better in school, and are more popular than those who see themselves in a negative light. People who have a positive self-image are also less likely to smoke, drink, use drugs, or engage in unhealthy activities Do you think you have only one self- image or many different ones?

Improving Self- Image Self- Image is linked to experiences… Turn to your table or elbow partner and discuss what you would consider your biggest success within the last year What would be your biggest success that you hope for in your future Volunteer to share out Things you can do: Never form a negative image after a couple of bad experiences Take stock. Look at yourself realistically, identify strengths and weaknesses Work on improving areas that you are weak. Develop a positive self-image by setting goals

Taking Stock List 5 strengths and list 5 weaknesses List 5 things you want to change or improve-- - rate your desire to change (high, average, low)

SMART GOAL Specific/Realistic: a long term goal Measurable/Manageable/Meaningful: short steps to reach your goal Achievable- know how you will achieve your goal REAL- think positive & meaningful- something you really want rather than something you feel you should do Timeline (semester)

Closure Have a positive mind Its ok to make mistakes If you don’t reach a particular goal or sub-goal, don’t think of it as failure Praise yourself for any progress that you make toward achieving your goal Identify any areas that need further improvement Use your imagination Anything else to add?

Summary Self-image is the mental picture (beliefs and attitudes) we have of ourselves. Self-image is formed as a result of our perceptions of what others think of us and our past experiences. We tend to act like the person we believe ourselves to be. Therefore, having a positive self-image is important because it can have a powerful influence on our behavior. Our self-image is complex and based on all that we do and think We should evaluate our strengths and weaknesses for specific situations and not over-generalize It is possible to develop a more positive self-image by setting and achieving personally meaningful goals.
