PBL 504 Aligning Trauma Informed Care and PBIS between Patrick Henry High School and Liberty Middle School Farley Allen

Project Goal My project goal was to align our (PHHS) PBIS and TIC programs with our feeder middle school (LMS) to insure consistency and a smooth transition to high school.

VTSS Virginia Tiered System Supports “The Virginia Tiered Systems of Supports (VTSS) is a data-driven decision making framework for establishing the academic, behavioral and social-emotional supports needed for a school to be an effective learning environment for all students.” VDOE website This system allows districts to use a multi-leveled system of supports to help students. It is data driven and provides uniformity of practice regarding academic, behavioral, social, and emotional needs.

PBIS Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports Bringing about desired behaviors in schools through positive reinforcement Establish consistent school wide expectations - Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Accountable Track data to determine focus areas (ex. Discipline) System of rewards to recognize positive behaviors

Alignment August joint Professional Development with LMS and PHHS on TIC Discipline referral system AP’s/TILT team meet regularly Attended session at conference to learn strategies being implemented at LMS.

Reflection and Next Steps LMS is further along in the process of PBIS implementation. Effective, sustainable change requires a slow, managed transition. Our committee is slowly rolling this out to our faculty to ensure quality training for students and staff. Data drives decisions and focus areas (ex. Online referral) Communication must be consistent and frequent. PBIS and TIC is establishing a school wide positive culture of care and support for all students at all levels of need.
