Development assistance and its impacts on hunger Development assistance is the official name for aid Aid is support or help given by richer countries to poorer countries of the world. It can come in many forms such as financial assistance, technical assistance, food or medical supplies Sources of aid can be governmental (1) Bilateral aid which is given from one country to another e.g. Irish Aid. (2) Multilateral which is given by governments to international bodies such as the United Nations or UN Non-governmental Aid is largely voluntary and provided by the public through organizations such as Concern and Self Help Africa

The role of NGO’s in the battle against world hunger The work of NGO’s has changed in recent years from the direct provision of services to actively looking for governmental support or at local community level to help build on local skills and resources NGO’s use the knowledge they have learned from working with poor communities to argue for national and international policy change to deal with the structural aspects of poverty and hunger These changes must be based on sustainable developments in these vulnerable areas
