3 - $200 What are the four main components on the Oral Reading Evaluation Sheet? What is “text”, “performer”, “audience”, and ”performance”?

3 - $300 Do judges confer with each other before ranking students? What is no, judging decisions are an individual responsibility?

3 - $400 What are judges considering when evaluating the “performer” part on the evaluation sheet? What is, judges are looking to see if the performer was in control of the performance situation and if the performer adequately reflected the mood of the selection?

3 - $500 Is there a verification period for this event? What is yes- if a panel of judges was used, a verification period shall be provided, during which unofficial results should be posted?

4 - $100 What type of manuscript may students read from? What is- it is suggested that the selection be held in a simple, dark-colored folder or small notebook that does not draw attention to itself?

4 - $200 Are introductions and transitions required? What is no- they are not required, but they are permitted (and they count towards the time limit) and are often helpful for judges?

4 - $300 Can the contest director and judges be coaches of participating students? What is- yes and no- the contest director may be the coach of a participating student, but a judge shall not be a coach of a participating student?

4 - $400 May a student recite rather than read their selection? What is- no, the rules require that students READ their selection.

4 - $500 How does someone determine if a selection is prose, poetry or theatre? What is- one way is to use the Dewey Decimal Classification and looking at the first three digits of the number?

5 - $100 Do selections need to be published? What is yes- the selection must be published although the poet may be unknown or anonymous?

5 - $200 May students read original material they wrote themselves? What is only if that material has been published in printed form?

5 - $300 Are audiences allowed in the contest room to listen to contestants? What is, yes.

5 - $400 Can contestants read a song for their selection for sixth grade poetry? Like Bob Dylan? What is only if it has also been published as poetry?

5 - $500 Is material by Dr. Seuss considered prose or poetry? What is- it depends. The Library of Congress describes many of his works as “stories in rhyme”, which may count as poetry. However, there are some of his works that are prose like Butter Battle Book.?
