OVERVIEW OF HUMAN ANAOMY & PHYSIOLOGY Chapter 1. OVERVIEW Anatomy is the study of structure Physiology is the study of function Form follows function.
What do we need to survive?.  To maintain boundaries – we need to check our insides in and our outsides out.  Movement – we need to move around, but.
 The chemical process by which your body breaks down food.
Anatomy and Physiology Objectives: 1. Describe the branches of Anatomy and Physiology 2. Recognize the main functions of each organ system.
1.2 Maintaining Life Objectives: 1. Become familiar with the human body’s necessary life functions & survival needs. 2. Define homeostasis & how it persists.
Maintaining Life!! Organ systems don’t work in isolation; they work cooperatively to promote the well-being of the entire body. Characteristics of living.

MAINTAINING LIFE Survival Needs

Survival Needs Nutrients Food contains chemicals used for energy and cell building Proteins and fats essential Minerals and vitamins for cell functions and oxygen transport in blood

Survival Needs Oxygen Chemical reactions that release energy require oxygen Respiratory and cardiovascular system

Survival Needs Water Accounts for 60-80% of body weight Obtained from ingested foods and liquids

Survival Needs Body Temperature 37 degrees C (98 degrees F) When too low metabolic reactions slow and can stop When too high chemical reactions happen too quickly leading breakdown of proteins

Survival Needs Atmospheric Pressure Breathing and exchange of CO2 and O2 in the lungs
