Filipino Mythology

Background/Introduction Info. Similar to other mythologies, the followers of Philippine mythology explained the who, what, when, where and why of existential questions for ancient Filipino people. For them, it was not simply a belief in higher powers, but a how-to guide for day to day life

What it’s all about… According to Damiana L. Eugenio, the “Mother of Philippine” folklore, myths describe “the origin of the world, of mankind, of death, or for characteristics of birds, animals, geographical features, and the phenomena of nature”. Falling under this subcategory are the stories of deities, defined as supernatural beings with human characteristics. These deities are either good or bad, and each of them have a specific function. "An Ultimate Guide To Philippine Mythology's Legendary Deities." FilipiKnow. N.p., 27 Nov. 2016. Web. 29 Nov. 2016.

Ancient Filipino Culture Not much information due to (once again) Spanish imperialism Lots of visual art including clay paintings and woven fabrics Performing arts were also a major part of the Ancient Philippines (dance, music, etc.)
