LACNIC – Open doors to the community Whats LACNIC? LACNIC is an organization: Who manage the Numbering Internet Resources for the Latinamerican and part of the Caribbean region assuring that all the interested parties have an equitable access to those resources and working based in spirit of stewardship and services to the community. Not for profit, incorporated in Uruguay and recognized as an International Organization by the Uruguayan Government. Membership based. That works under policies that are developed in open, transparent and participative bottom up processes. Who represents the effort of the regional industry to manage the above mentioned resources in a self-regulation manner.

LACNIC – Open doors to the community Formal recognition LACNIC became the forth RIR in the world in 31/10/2002 through the ICANN Board resolution in Shanghai meeting Confirmed through the IANA report in 7/11/2002

LACNIC – Open doors to the community What resources does LACNIC manage? Resources that are fundamental for the growing and development of the Internet. IPv4 addresses IPv6 addresses Autonomous System Numbers. Services Whois Directory Reverse DNS

LACNIC – Open doors to the community What are IP addresses? Every device connected to the Internet in the world, needs an IP number. Ex (IPv4) 2001:13c7:7003:0:212:f0ff:fe81:95c8/64 (IPv6) Those addresses are used for localization Independents of the DNS A finite resource. Not a property.

LACNIC – Open doors to the community To administrate the resources with responsibility, as well as to guarantee equal-opportunity access to these resources for all the Internet operators within the region. To contribute to the development of the Internet within the region, through an active cooperation policy and defending the interests of the regional Internet community. To contribute to generate conditions for the Internet to become an effective instrument of social inclusion and economic development for all the countries and citizens of Latin America and the Caribbean. LACNIC – Open doors to the community Strategic Planning VISION – To be a leader in the construction and articulation of collaborative efforts for Internet development and stability in Latin America and the Caribbean. MISION – To administrate Internet numbering resources, contributing to the creation of collaboration and cooperation opportunities that will benefit the regional Internet community, committed to: - the excellence and quality of services provided to our clients, - constantly perfecting an impartial, participative and transparent self-regulation model, - the adoption and promotion of technological advancements and standards within the industry, - strengthening the relationships with the main stakeholders of the Internet within the region, - the development of regional capabilities through training and the transmission of Internet-related technology.

LACNIC – Open doors to the community LACNIC and de Caribbean LACNIC provides services in 10 countries/territories of the Caribbean (considering AN as 1). They represent about 75% of the Caribbean population. They include English speaking countries, Dutch/Papiamento, Spanish and French speaking countries. 7 % of the LACNIC members belong to the Caribbean region.

LACNIC – Open doors to the community LACNIC BOARD 6 members + CEO Every director serves for 3 years. Every year 2 seats are renewed. Current Board Members - Oscar Messano - Fabio Marinho - Oscar Robles - Javier Salazar - Hartmut Glaser - Carlos Neyra Every members has the right to vote, and to nominate candidates, including her/himselve.

LACNIC – Open doors to the community LACNIC Meetings LACNIC organize one meeting a year usually in the last week of May. Last meeting, LACNIC XI was held in Salvador de Bahía, Brazil. LACNIC meetings are the house of: LACNIC annual members assembly. Policy Pubic Forum IPv6 Forum Regional Interconnection Forum Security Forum Tutorials (IPv6, CSIRTRs setup, Peering) Other organizations meetings (ISOC, LACTLD, eCOM-LAC) Aprox. 300 participants per meeting. Last meeting 290 people from 29 countries. High level speakers. Scholarships.

LACNIC – Open doors to the community Multilingualism Multilingual staff Website in 3 languages updated at the same time. Translation to important documents to other languages soon. Real time translation in every LACNIC activity. English, Portugues and Spanish allowed in any list.

LACNIC – Open doors to the community Development agenda LACNIC invest a big part of its incomes in activities that are intended to promote the Information Society and Internet development in the region. Different activities and programs.

LACNIC – Open doors to the community FRIDA Program In partnership with IDRC and ISOC. Small grants program for funding ICT research projects 2 nd phase. Total amount for this second phase: US$ 630,000 Total: More than US$ 1 million in 4 years. 41 projects already funded. 10 more being approved.

LACNIC – Open doors to the community +RAICES To deploy Internet DNS root servers 2004 MoU with ISC – F Root Server responsible Project Roles: ISC, F root server responsible, gives its experience and expertise to manage anycast copies Local Host: provides facilities (building, conectivity and some equipments) LACNIC identify local hosts and provides funds for installation and maintennance costs during the fisrt 2 years and equipments.

LACNIC – Open doors to the community +RAICES Main Results: 5 root servers installed Chile (2005), Argentina and Venezuela (2006); Panama and Equador (2007) In articulation with: governments, academy, private associations 2009: two copies to be located in the Caribbean. Talks held about Curaçao and Sint Maarten Other Root Servers to deploy? Probably Root server K in Cuba.
