Demonstrative Adjectives and Pronouns

Demonstrative adjectives show where things are. That ball (over there) That ball This ball

They show whether things are… Over there (allá) There (allí) Here (aquí)

Demonstrative adjectives… go before nouns agree in number and gender with the nouns they describe Examples: Este uniforme es de José. (This uniform is José’s.) Estas atletas son buenas. (These athletes are good.)

If something is close (aquí)… masculine feminine singular este (this) esta (this) plural estos (these) estas (these)

If something is not as close (allí)… masculine feminine singular ese (that) esa (that) plural esos (those) esas (those)

If something is far (allá)… masculine feminine singular aquel aquella (that over there) (that over there) plural aquellos aquellas (those over there) (those over there)

Fill in the blanks with the correct demonstrative adjective _______ (that) chico se llama Juan. ¿Quién es ______ (that) chica? _______ (these) equipos son buenos. _______ (this ) equipo es mi favorito. Vamos a jugar en _______ (that over there) campo. _______ (those over there) raquetas son nuestras.

Las respuestas Ese (that) chico se llama Juan. ¿Quién es esa (that) chica? Estos (these) equipos son buenos. Este (this ) equipo es mi favorito. Vamos a jugar en aquel (that over there) campo. Aquellas (those over there) raquetas son nuestras.

Demonstrative pronouns take the place of nouns. They agree in number and gender with the nouns they replace. Example: ¿Cuánto cuesta éste? (How much does this one cost?) Ésta es mi favorita. (This one is my favorite.)

Demonstrative Pronouns… Are the same as demonstrative adjectives but have accents. this these that those that those éste éstos ése ésos aquél aquéllos ésta éstas ésa ésas aquélla aquéllas

Neuter Demonstrative Pronouns Three pronouns are used to refer to circumstance or genereal nouns. Esto (this), eso (that), aquello (that). Example: Esto no es posible. (This is not possible.)

Translate the following into Spanish. This athlete is from Brazil. Este atleta es de Brasil. 2. That athlete is from Argentina. Ese atleta es de Argentina.

Translate the following into Spanish. Those people (over there) are from Spain. Aquellas personas son de España. These people are from Portugal. Estas personas son de Portugal.

Translate the following into Spanish. I like this one. (la camisa) Me gusta ésta. I want that one. (la pelota) Quiero ésa. 7. I like that one (over there). (el uniforme) Me gusta aquél.

Translate the following into Spanish. 8. I like that bat. Me gusta ese bate. I like that bat over there. Me gusta aquel bate. I like that one over there. (that = el bate) Me gusta aquél.
