10.3 – Gene Linkage and Polyploidy Genetic Recombination – The new combination of genes produced by crossing over and independent assortment. Genetic Recombination formula is 2n n = number of chromosome pairs Each parent can have a genetic recombination of 2n.

Gene Linkage Genes that are located close to each other on the same chromosome are linked and usually travel together during gamete formation. Makes an exception to Mendel’s law of independent assortment.

Chromosome Maps Chromosome maps – drawings that show the sequence of genes on a chromosome Not actual chromosome distances, but relative The higher the crossover frequency, the farther apart the two genes are. Crossover frequency correlates with the relative distance between the genes 1 unit = 1%
