Learning & Teaching Sustainability through Marine Engineering Design Newcastle University Learning and Teaching Conference 2018 – 21 March 2018 3 Minutes Lightning Talk Learning & Teaching Sustainability through Marine Engineering Design Dr Ivan CK Tam Director of Operations (Marine) Newcastle University in Singapore

3 Minutes Lightning Talk Abstract: Waste heat energy from the diesel cycle of the main engine is traditionally diverted to produce steam and heating. A new concept is introduced to students in generating cooling effect through the absorption refrigeration cycle. Students would carry out an energy balance and integrate two independent engineering cycles through a coursework of Marine Engineering Design (MAR3133). They are tasked to retrofit the central cooling system to produce refrigeration on board ship. Students will learn and appreciate the significance of energy conservation and sustainability through improvement of shipboard systems. The Singapore campus allows me a unique opportunity to be involved in the delivery of these otherwise, three isolated modules.

The Diesel Engine Cycle

The Absorption Refrigeration Cycle

Recovery of Waste Heat in Central Cooling System

Sustainability Ageing and Health Social Renewal Excellence with Impact

Concluding Remarks Internal Combustion Engines and Marine Refrigeration & Air Conditioning are two important topics for marine engineering students. They are traditionally taught separately by different lecturing staff in Marine Newcastle. Assessment is split into Part A and Part B in the examination paper which students may not find the coherence of the two topics. In the Singapore campus, the two topics are covered by same member of staff who also delivers the module Marine Engineering Design (MAR3133) which provides him a unique teaching opportunity to link these two topics together. Students will get a holistic view of energy management - a great benefit to their future engineering career. Students will appreciate sustainability through this project.
