Presentation transcript:

Do Now It is important that we take responsibility for our health. Shields have been used as protective devices for centuries. At each table, there is a shield that you will use for today’s project. Before we get into today’s assignment, take a minute to discuss who used shields and how where they used with the other students at your table. Just like the warriors that used shields, we too use shields. They may not be made of metal, but we use them all the time even if we don’t know it. TEST IN TWO DAYS

In your own words When we talk about protective shields, we are talking about protecting ourselves against something called risk factors. Risk factors are actions or behaviors that represent a potential health threat. They are behaviors that contribute to unintentional and intentional injuries. Can you name a few? What is the difference between a risk factor and a cumulative risk factor?

Answer this Why is it that some people take preventative measures for their health and others do not take any measures for their health?

Protective Factors Can you name some ways we use shields today? What are protective factors? Assignment: You need to choose four protective factors from your own life and (1) explain how they are protective and (2) explain what they protect you from. How will you be graded?

Example of protective factors assignment Name a Protective Factor? _______________ What Risk Factor does it protect you from? _____________ How is _______________ protecting You from _____________?

CLOSURE On a scrap piece of paper, write down something that you have learned in this chapter. Each table will have a section designated to cover so that when each paper is read, the chapter may be reviewed. Once the students have written something down, they will pass it around the room and someone else will read what they wrote.
