What is Technology? Chapter 1 Section 4

Technology is the practical use of science. Technology is a way of changing the natural world to meet human needs or solve problems. A person who is trained for the use of technology is an engineer.

Technology Design Process Identifying the need – state the problem Researching the problem – gather information Designing a solution- Brainstorming; Constraint Building a prototype – model (computer or physical) Troubleshooting and redesigning – identify any problems. If there are any problems fix it. Communicating the solution – share accomplishments.

Technological System Goal – what is the purpose? Input – something that is put into a system in order to reach the goal. Process –a sequence of actions that the system undergoes. Output – the product; what comes out of the system. Feedback (in some cases) – information a system uses to monitor the input, process, and output so that the system meets its goal.

Technology as a System Input Process Feedback Goal Output

Does society and technology impact each other? Automobiles Computers Cell phones Tools

A Video History of the Cell Phone

Mac Lab You will research a form of technology- *(you may pick what it is). In a paragraph, tell its history- How it began Who invented it What it’s like now What is it used for? Is it helpful? Could it still improve? If so, how?
