Jehoshaphat and Ahab

Jehoshaphat was a good king. 2 Chron. 17:3-6. Followed God, not Baal, got rid of the high places. (1 Kings 22:46) 2 Chron. 17:7-9. Had the Law read to all the people throughout the land. (19:4) 2 Chron. 19:4-7. Warns judges to judge righteously. 2 Kings 3:7-11. Out of water, relies upon God. 2 Chron. 20. Attacked by a league of nations, turns to God for salvation.

Ahab was a wicked king. 1 Kings 21:25-26. “There was none who sold himself to do what was evil in the sight of the LORD like Ahab, whom Jezebel his wife incited. He acted very abominably in going after idols, as the Amorites had done, whom the LORD cast out before the people of Israel.”

Jehoshaphat wants to be friends with Ahab. 1 Kings 22:4. “And he said to Jehoshaphat, ‘Will you go with me to battle at Ramoth-gilead?’ And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, ‘I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.’” 2 Chron. 18:1 “Now Jehoshaphat had great riches and honor, and he made a marriage alliance with Ahab.” 2 Chron. 21:6. “. . . for the daughter of Ahab was his wife.”

Jehoshaphat Rebuked for alliance with Ahab 2 Chron. 19:2 “But Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him and said to King Jehoshaphat, "Should you help the wicked and love those who hate the LORD? Because of this, wrath has gone out against you from the LORD.”

Consequences of Jehoshaphat’s Alliance with Ahab 2 Chron. 21:6,11. Son, Joram, rebuilt idols’ high places. 2 Chron. 21:4. He killed all his brothers. 2 Chron. 21:12-20. Joram was punished by having all his sons but one killed, and he died a gruesome death. 2 Chron. 22:3. Ahaziah was also a wicked king, killed by Jehu. 2 Kings. 10:12. Forty-two royal kinsmen killed for aiding Ahab’s descendants.

Consequences of Jehoshaphat’s Alliance with Ahab 2 Chron. 22:10-12. Athaliah kills all her grandchildren, except one, in a power grab.

Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, ‘I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them’, says the Lord, ‘and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.’”
