Life in the New State: Ambitious Reforms Archibald Murphey Reformers Push Harder NC Constitution Of 1835 Humanitarian, Believed government should be used to improve peoples lives, Proposed navigation, irrigation, transportation, and education reforms in NC His proposals were listened to, but ignored. 1830’s- NC need to reform grew strong, NC losing population, Gov. Swain holds constitutional convention. Improved voting rights (everyone except women and slaves), Election of officials instead of being chosen, Western NC had more seats in the legislature.
