Ancient Greece: A Tour Around Athens [Mr. McKinley] [Bullitt Central High School] [World Civilizations] Ancient Greece: A Tour Around Athens

Introduction I can the daily life for Athenians during the Golden Age. Why? It is important to know what the daily life was since the Renaissance will be all about bringing back Greek and Roman culture, we need to know what daily life they wish they had back.

Overview Athens was one of the two most important city state in Greece. At that time it was known as the city of learning. Many thinkers came from Athens, people watch interesting plays and there were beautiful buildings.

Question time! Imagine you have a friend you met from another country. They are coming to visit you and want to know as much as they can about the wonderful town called, “Shepherdsville”. When they arrive, you give them a tour. Get out a piece of paper and choose 5 of these topics and write a brief description of what they would see in Shepherdsville regarding these topics. Architecture Education Laws (what can they do or not do?) Religion Women Clothing choices Food Music

What will you learn today? This activity will teach you about the daily life of Athens long ago. See what is similar and what is different. There are 10 stations. You will get into partnerships of no more than 3. I will pass out 1 folder to each group. You will have 4 minutes to complete the tasks inside the folders. When the timer goes off, you will send your folder to a new group and get another folder. DO NOT CHOOSE A FOLDER YOU ALREADY HAD. After this is done, I have some questions for you to answer for an exit slip.

Questions & Answers Do you have any questions about what you learned today?

Conclusion: ANSWER THESE 3 QUESTIONS ON A SMALL PIECE OF PAPER AS AN EXIT SLIP What aspects of Athenian Daily life did you most enjoy learning about in this activity? In what ways do you think Athens was like a modern city of today much like Louisville? How was it different? Why do you think scholars call this period of Athenian History, the “Golden Age”?

Conclusion: ANSWER THIS ON A PIECE OF PAPER AS AN EXIT SLIP Imagine you were from a small town far from Athens and you moved to Athens recently. You just completed a small walkthrough of the town, now write a letter to someone back home detailing everything you saw. Tell as much detail as possible about Athens.

Resources Here are some books if you are interested in reading more about what you learned today.
